The front surface of the beaver's incisors is orange-brown because of the iron in the diet of this animal.  The iron makes the front layer of the incisors very hard, and the bone-like layer immediately behind it is relatively softer.  In combination, this two-layered incisor design confers a chisel shape to the incisors allowing the beaver to efficiently gnaw through bark and timber.
