Our society, culture, and world glorify violence instead of showing it for the true horror it is. It starts being taught to boys from a young age and continues throughout their growing up. It's taught to them through violence and abuse in the home, bullying and fighting in school, the violence in television, movies, and video games, and in the wider society at large. It's taught to them by our nation's obsession with violence and firearms. It's taught to them in the news through reporting on violence in the world. It is so pervasive it becomes engrained in their minds and will effect their personality and behavior throughout life. Add the phenomenon of serious mental illness or substance abuse to the mix and this can create a very violent mix. All over the news we hear of young men carrying out horrific acts of violence against their fellow humanity. Not just in the United States of America but throughout the world. We see all around us examples of man's inhumanity to man. From tyrants and dictators to violent extremist and terrorist. We see so much suffering and ask why? Perhaps the question we should be asking instead is why not? Is it really any surprise far too many boys grow up to be violent men who seek to oppress and harm others? The solution is changing our hearts and mind as a society and as a world. To start showing the true horrors of violence rather then glorifying it. To combat the epidemic of violence and abuse in homes around the world. To fight against bullying and fighting in schools. For parents and guardians to better control the violent media their kids are exposed to and for society to take a stand against violence by refusing to watch, play, or purchase such media as if it does not become profitable to make and sell such media the producers will stop producing it. For society to attempt to turn from it's violent impulses. For people to stop purchasing, carrying, and advocating for firearms. For people to turn away from extremist, hateful, and violent ideologies. For the news media to focus on other aspects of the news rather then only focusing on the violent, tragedies, and disasters and stop the habit of showing violent acts over and over again and making martyrs out of those responsible by showing their pictures over and over again and so focusing on the aggressors rather then the victims where the primary focus should be. For there to be much focus on better identifying and treating mental illness. For there to be better treatment for substance abuse. Lastly each and every one of us taking a stand to speak out against violence. If we do not begin to do these and similar things I fear for the future of humanity.
