Arctic Monkeys Are Fastest British Debut

Undated handout photo of the Arctic Monkeys, who Sunday Jan. 29, 2006, smashed the record for the fastest selling debut album of all time in Britain. The Sheffield band's ' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' was only released on Jan. 23, and has sold more than 360,000 copies. One of the key aspects of this story - that isn't getting the attention - is that their demos were made freely available on peer-to-peer networks and free to download from the bands website.
How does this explain the thinking that P2P is killing music?
I was wondering what the "Internet-savvy marketing" was.
It's an interesting point though. You get the impression that record companies take too simplistic a view, believing that all P2P music downloads are bad for sales. It may still be true in the round (and probably is) but there must be countless cases where people have heard of a band or track, tried it out on P2P and ended up buying the CD in the shops. I have come across cases like that.
The record companies are (wince) "stuck in a groove" marketing-wise. They need to think outside the box a bit more. They will have to adapt to both the opportunities and threats presented by the Internet or go the way of the dinosaur.
I saw a peice on Newsnight about this, apparantly their marketing department paid buskers in London to play their music to get it into people's heads. They're also starting it to promote the new Johnny Cash movie and greatest hits album.
I have been wanting to buy this album in the States for some time now. Can't wait for it to be released here.
This album is just amazing. The year has already started with one of its greatest CDs being released. And A CERTAIN ROMANCE is my new favourite song.
This album is very mediocore. Their quick rise to popularity dosn't make sense to me. The two singles aren't even catchy. If you want good post =-punk, listen to Wire.
