So now Google is going to store not only all of your e-mail, but all of your IM conversations? And send you ads accordingly? Does this bother anyone? I know, no "humans" are actually looking at the data, but I have a higher expectation of privacy for chat and e-mail I suppose, which is one reason I don't use Gmail.
This is very interesting. I love the idea that I open Gmail to send someone an email, notice they're online and available, and send them an IM instead. In an office setting, this could be invaluable. There are times when even the speed of email is not fast enough; you have a question and an answer is imperative now, not in 3 minutes. Granted, any IM client can accomplish this. It's the integration that makes it different. The Google Talk client is not necessary to use this service. It's entirely browser-based, meaning no extra install on 30+ machines. I honestly don't think you'll see it connect to AIM, Y! or MSN anytime soon. Those networks are the competition, and Google has a record of building things their way, without regard to existing paradigms.
funcrunch: You can disable logging.
The privacy issues surrounding this bother me a bit, however the technology excites me. I wish Google would do more things of this nature, integrating their various services.
This is a great concept.
Privacy Schmivacy. If you don't like it, don't use it. I personally don't have anything to hide.
Go Google!
@w8in:
Last time I checked Google Talk [ GTALK 15.49 -0.03] wasn't an option there yet.
It is already enabled through Jabber.
Type in the following:
Username = username@gmail.com
Password= Your Gmail password
Great news!

Thanks..I forgot Jabber was an option on Meebo too.
BrettMike, Julie Bernstein has touched a strong point.
If you be kind to read my post at http://keynote.newsvine.com you'll see what i suspect she is talking about.
Basically it talks about chat conversations logging prior to chat service start, when using not Gmail to do it but another app, GAIM, under Jabber (XMPP).
I don't know, all that google makes in a last few years is cool and usable but they always think only on them selves. New gmail mobile looks great and is fast but what if I want to check my other mail accounts? I think ill go back to my old app Movamail With it you can watch every mail account, it supports POP, IMAP and Webmail.
You're in Easy Mode. If you prefer, you can use XHTML Mode instead. |
