You're getting really ridiculous at this point. I am becoming convinced this site operates outside of any grasp of what is top news. Please reconsider what goes on the front page and what doesn't. This is turning into just another internet tabloid at this rate.

I agree with the posts here.... I am a democrat and not a particularly big fan of the administration. But i still do not see this as an important issue it was obviously an accident. Things like this happen and its unfortunate when people try and read into them somehow and make them something they are not. I kinda of equate this to when the presidents music list on his ipod was leaked. Lots of people were talking about it and even coming to conclusions about the president. The whole time i was thinking its just a music list.

We're not saying it's not newsworthy Mike. We're saying it doesn't belong on the front page, time and time again. This is an "odds and end" news story event, the entire event included. How can this be on the front page almost since the time it became public?

Mike D: I agree. When a political figure shoots someone, it IS news. Granted, it's also been a fairly slow news day, which is why the followup stories are also working their way up to the top. Looking down the rest of the "major" AP wire stories, I honestly don't see any others that would work well as a lead story. In other words, keep up the good work and ignore the ones who have nothing better to do but complain.

And to the complainers: If you don't like the story, just ignore it. It'll go away soon enough.

And that's just the first page. Are you saying all of these stories have less "top news" implications than a minor hunting accident? Unbelieveable.

James, every single one of those is either a followup or has already had top billing in the past two days. So, since that's the case, I would say that they're all about the same. Is it really news that the White House says that they did nothing wrong regarding Katrina? Is it still news (2 days later) that snow fell in the Northeast? Haven't investors been going sour on Google for the past two or three months? And, shock of all shocks, people elsewhere in the world think that Guantanamo is a bad idea! I think you get the point. Again, the VP shooting someone in the head (even though only minor injury was sustained) is a pretty big deal, regardless of whether you think it's just an 'odds and end' piece.

If the vice president breaks a rule especialy by failing to buy a hunting stamp is a newsworthy article saying how he is immune to the same rules as us.

Have you all not been seeing the news on TV. This is a top story there to so it's not shocking to see it on the main page here. Get over it, no one is forcing you to read the main story. Move on to the areas you are interested in.

Come on, man, it's Republican-bashing! It's effectively Bush-bashing by proxy! And we all know how stylish that is. I mean, what other news do we really need?

All of those stories have much greater short and long term implications on government and infrastructure than a small hunting accident. Much more. This leading the front page on and off the last two days is beyond any reasonable decision of it being "top news" that long.

I've been hit with size 6 dove pellets and it's not a fun thing. It was not my fault, I was in the line and was shot into by the guy to the left of me. Good thing he was going for a low flying covey, otherwise I would have holes in my head.

It is the responsibility of both parties to be aware of what is going on around them and obviously these two were just being careless, and someone paid. Just a good thing he didn't pay with his life.

Whenever a news site is user controlled, things like this are going to happen. The bottom line is that this has been, for better or worse, the most talked about news story in the last day or two so it probably should be on the frontpage.

This might be a minor news story if we were talking about a mechanic in North Dakota in a hunting accident. But unfortunately for this entire country the man involved in the hunting accident who showed incredibly bad judgement is the same man who arguably has more influence than the president himself. He's the guy who apologizes for nothing, lashes out at any viewpoint different from his own and tells associates to 'f' off. You can treat this like an isolated incident to be dismissed but for me is just the latest in a long list of bad decisions. This accident is totally indicative of all this man's actions - reckless and life threatening.

Yeah, and he didn't have his Texas $7 Hunting Stamp. When the police came to question him that night, the secret service turned them away. So what if he killed that man? If the police came then, what would the Secret Sevice do? Turn them away? There are some questions here. Should the Vice President be able, by virtue of his title or position be able to tell his secret servicemen to do whatever he feels is best for him, even if it is against the law? What about waiting so long before it was actually announced?

OK, trying to improve the tone here a bit:

VP Dick Cheney is an honest hunter, out to get his next meal, for which anyone needs to congratulate him. He leaves the world at bay, and instead decides to shoot some birds. Good for him, because no one needs him!

About the shooting accident, it is a shame that he can't tell the difference between onr of our feathered friends and an almost octogenarian city sleek (he must have been awfuklly hungry and weak!). Does he need an eye check? Take a hunter refresher course? Stay home to watch the TV news instead? One thing is clear: His reflexes are shot!

Finally, for the uproar here at NV re: news status... Nothing is really news, news are for babies, kind of a pacifier in this "do not even shrug at anything" society we are evolving into...

Armstrong said she told Cheney on Sunday morning that she was going to inform the local paper, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. She said he agreed, and the newspaper was the first to report the incident on its Web site Sunday afternoon.

The owner of the ranch pretty much was going break the news. I guess the VP press corp takes Sundays off.

What I do know is that if a local hunter would pepper someone it would make the paper under local news. Since he is the Vice President it is National News. People will read into it what they will, but at the end of the day he made a judgement error. Who hasn't? For me anyway case closed.

While some/alot of the jokes have been funny and Cheney deserves some of it (being a politician and sharing some of the blame in the accident), the White House news media sound like a bunch of spoiled brats.They're hounding the White House for not telling them sooner. Sounds like the reporters are mad someone else broke the story. Bill Plante (sp?) of CBS news was saying the White House broke the number 1 rule to report things immediately. I wonder where this rule is written down, other than in the reporter's mind.
