I must say that I am disappointed.
I wanted Jake to win it.
Next time Jake :)
How could this news be 3 hours ago. Just came out half an hour ago
LOL. Sad Oscars
The AP publishes these things as the event happens, so their first report was three hours ago. They just keep updating the article as new winners are announced. We probably need a "last updated" line at the top.
"Pulls off" best picture? Must be a Brokeback Mountain fan...
Yeah, talk about sensationalism, Brokeback wasn't the powerhouse favorite its being portrayed as here. Most people seemed to be talking Brokeback or Crash. It isn't stunner. A great film won.
In my humble opinion, Crash was absolutely terrible. I'm not saying that to be difficult - I just thought it was emotionally manipulative, poorly written and pretentious. The whole theme seemed to be "People can be multi-faceted! To prove it, we're going to show you a cast of characters with not one but TWO dimensions!"
I didn't see Brokeback or Capote so I guess I can't really argue whether it was the best of the nominated films. I can say that I thought King Kong was pretty fantastic, and portrayed a big monkey as much more emotionally compelling than any three characters in Crash combined.
That's my opinion. What thoughts?
Crash was an amazing movie. It deserves this award hands down.
Crash was an ok film with a good message. I didn't see Brokeback Mountain so I can't really say with much certainity that it should have won. However, my wife saw both and was convinced Crash didn't deserve it. But really it doesn't matter. I was just peeved how many times actors/President of the Academy whined about us needing to go see more movies. The key is to make better films, not simply remake old films (War of the Worlds) and crap like Deuce Bigalow. If you tell better stories then people will go. Plus maybe they could lower popcorn prices and use real butter.
And do something about those hooligans that sit up front and talk!
(note: if any of the old people who shushed me repeatedly at a matinee showing of King Arthur in the AMC Lennox Theater in Columbus, OH, several years ago is reading this, I really am sorry...) ;)
I was disappointed that Crash won. I thought the acting by the ensemble cast was great, but I felt like the movie was beating me over the head with its message (it's sort of the poster film for white-liberal guilt). None of the scenarios presented by the film seemed realistic at all, and when you discover how interconnected all the characters are as the film unfolds, the whole thing reveals itself as a contrived mess.
Now there are other films that use interconnected characters and scenarios more effectively (pulp fiction and magnolia to name a couple off the top of my head), and these movies all worked for me. Crash, as ambitious as it may be, just didn't.
I loved Crash and I'm happy that it won, even though I wanted Syriana/Good night & Good luck to win that.
I'm with Myk. I thought Crash was terrible, stereotyping stereotypers and using the Hollywood and celebrity elite to accuse the "rest of us" of being racist.
To add to that, the L.A.-based movie winning Best Picture feels like Hollywood congratulating itself for its social consciousness.
Walter K,
I think the fact that both of the last 2 best pictures were nearly canned until they had serious celebrity backing speaks volumes about how bad Hollywood has become at picking decent films to make. They do love to congratulate themselves after its all over, but getting them to stop signing off on Ben Affleck films and romantic comedies with Kate Hudson is a monumental task.
I saw all of the nominated films except for Munich, and I really thought, although I've heard no one agree with me yet, that Capote was it. It was a really stunning human portrait with a depth and breadth of feeling that I thought was missing in the others that were more sensational and barrier breaking on a more superficial level.

I couldn't agree more. If a movie can't stand on its own without trying to guilt me into liking it, it doesn't even deserve to be nominated. I guess the acting was okay, but the actors hardly had anything to work with. What horribly written characters.
Regarding Crash: The scene with the gun and the girl and the slow-mo and the music and everything in particular (you know the one I mean) reeeeeeeally drove me nuts, because among the people I was watching it with was one girl who was just sobbing and it really drove home to me how emotionally manipulative the film is. I hate movies that tell me how to feel with heavy-handed structural "techniques" - and to give this "best picture of the year" really just kinda makes me feel bad.
It isn't a surprise. Crash is a great movie. Brobekack Mountain is a great movie too, but didn't deserve win all the Oscars only because is "politically correct".

Couldn't agree more Walter K. There's nothing about crash that i would consider memorable... other than how pissed off i was that i wasted money renting it. But i guess the academy felt the need to be "edgy."
-for those of you keeping score, martin scorcese 0 oscars; 3-6 mafia, 1 oscar- jon stewart - priceless!
