This photo released Tuesday March 7, 2006 by the IFREMER (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) shows a new crustacean, called "Kiwi hirsuta". The eyeless shellfish, about 15cm long was discovered in March 2005 during a diving mission led by American researcher Robert Vrijenhoek, of the MBARI Institut, Cal., in hydrothermal vents of the Pacific Antartic Ridge, south of Easter Island. that thing is freaky, it looks like a tick sucked too much blood from an albino monkey. I'm assuming that no other creatures have "fur" like that. Any idea what it's for?

Well, as it is a water creature it could have something to do with a few things.

1) The fur could be used for "sniffing"
2) Feeling around its area
3) Some sort of defense. Much like spider perhaps.

That "fur" would definitely be highly sensitive to water currents, no question about that. Just on that one characteristic alone, it probably gives the creature a fairly high-resolution sense of what is going on around it. It wouldn't need eyes with senses like that.

All kinds of other stuff could be in that fur--infrared, passive sonar, EM, you name it, but the sensitivity to what is physically happening to the water around it is probably pretty solidly it's primary function.

Are there any other crusteaceans with hair? Assuming this is some kind of hair and not something else.

Yeah, I thought it looked like a spider. Or, a monkey. Crazy looking, whatever it is!

Weird as hell, but goes to show that there's much left in the world to be discovered.

Stop all this talk about scientific discovery. There are some simple questions to be answered.

          • When and where can I eat one?
          • Will there be a new Blonde Lobster restaurant opening it's doors near me soon?
          • Will the B-52's write a catchy new single?

These are the real questions. Answers?

I'm leaning towards heebie geebies but might be good dipped in butter.

It looks cuddly, something I'd take to bed with me to keep my warm, and then eat when I get the munchies.

I've noticed (and have often wondered about) small hairlike structures on many crab legs that i've eaten. Of course, they weren't nearly this thick or tuft-like. That said, this discovery doesn't particularly strike me as incredibly odd. Sure, it's weird, but there have certainly been weirder creatures in the world's past.

The adult Dungeness crab has black hair covering parts of it's limbs. It's freaky looking, but very tasty. Nothing like this thing, though.

Discoveries like this keep me enthralled with the pursuit of scuba diving. Though I have slim chances of ever finding something no one has ever seen, I regularly find organisms I've never seen and am equally befuddled by.
