Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is one of my favourite albums of all time. I have heard great things about Soft Bulletin but I am really wary. I'd hate for the Flaming Lips to disappoint. Same goes for the new album. I don't understand why they decided to write a protest album. It seems very uncommonly pedestrian of them.

You're going to have to listen to a few more of their albums before you can start making remarks like that; One needs a basis of more than one of their albums. (Admitting that you haven't heard the Soft Bulletin doesn't help.) In addition, being afraid that the Flaming Lips will disappoint you is damning yourself to never listening to another record of theirs...something that I know I couldn't do to a band that I loved. Buy their records, give them a chance to wow you...but most importantly...give the records some time to live with you before you decide if they're a disappointment or not. Great records demand more from a listener...that's why people are still listening to the Soft Bulletin and not Hit Me Baby One more Time.
Thanks for article, so funny that I bumped into it when just today I picked up yoshimi
Yoshimi is a great album. I purchased the 5.1 Dolby DVD for Christmas and hearing all the instruments in different speakers and all the effects was really neat! I highly advise you buy it, Samo, if you enjoy Yoshimi.
I'm really liking Yoshimi, I had heard a few songs here and there over the years. After spending some time with it I will move onto "at war with the mystics"
