Internet Agency Weighs New Domain Name

Todd Masonis, co-founder of the contact management service Plaxo Inc., poses for a portrait at his company offices in Mountain View, Calif., Friday April 14, 2006. Reaching out and touching someone used to be as simple as dialing a string of numbers. But now there are home, cell and work phone numbers from which to choose, and sometimes work extensions to remember. The Internet's key oversight agency is now considering a ``.tel'' domain name to help people manage their contact information online. Masonis is familiar with the hassles of keeping track of everyone. His parents have had the same phone number for some 30 years, and ``for a long time that was how they are identified,'' Masonis said. ``But in the last two years, even they have a couple of cell phones, a couple of e-mail addresses and Web pages and instant message IDs.''(AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

.tel, right. I don't see ".tel" being useful. Sure I could find a business or two with it, but would real "normal" people really adopt it? And if they do would they have the time to keep up with it?

I wouldn't buy a .tel, not worth it. If I want that kind of page, I can do the subdomain thing, like is suggested in the article... for free. Besides, with the surveillance going on thru the telcos, this is likely something of concern to privacy advocates.

This just sounds like a stoneaged idea for a modern world. A bandaid for a wound that doesn't exist. The .xxx domain, now there's something a little bit more worth while.
I don't know why we are so attached to the .com, I have tried to convince my customers we could use a .info, but they prefer to use hypens or something in order to use a .com when their name is taken. I don'e see why someone will be interested in getting a .tel....but who can .tel now?
I wouldn't encourage a .info, you know why? Many people have that and .biz tld's blacklisted because of spammers.

.info is great and everything, but most people like to have .com because it is the most prominent.
I'm very surprised to see no mention of the .name top level domain...
