Man "Strict Islamic Law" sucks if you are a woman. When I was stationed in Saudi Arabia we didn't really get to deal with the local population much - but some of the laws did cascade to our female soldiers. For instance, the women weren't allowed to drive off camp/post.
I wasn't aware that Iran had more lax laws in regard to women than Saudi did though. It seems I only see news articles that focus on the crazy unjust cases in Iran and Iraq - I can't believe that none occur in Saudi. Yet another reason to distrust the media.
It's amazing to me we try use sanctions against countries we feel are violating basic human rights yet we remain in bed with Saudi Arabia where it appears women are regarded as nothing more than property. What about their basic human rights?
I remember a news article where a woman drove her dying husband to the hospital because they were in the desert and no one could help.
Apparently there was a big issue about the woman driving even in that situation.
I should have clarified: this happened in Saudi Arabia.
Women would sit in separate section of the stands, away from the usually raucous male fans.
I actually like this part of the article. I might be more inclined to go to sporting events if I could sit away from raucous male fans. ;)
This is a tiny step towards goodness. If security isn't provided for women at soccer games, then it is irrelevant, because trust me, plenty of wackos will try to murder women at the games and find a way to justify their killings.
Unfortunately, women in Iran are still treated like second-class citizens, similar to Saudi Arabia, and that is still unacceptable. I wish someday I had the capital to create a movie where the words "man" and "woman" were switched everywhere in the Qu'ran. Where men would be killed if they were tied up and raped by women. Where men couldn't drive by themselves. Where men weren't allowed to work and had to stay home and raise the kids.
We have all these damn reality crap shows, and they have so much potential. I don't want to see a trading wife show where a "white mother" is switched into a "black family" for a week, and let drama unfold...
why can't we have a Moderate Eye for the Fundamentalist Guy, or Switching places in society: ayatollah versus his wife?
It's easy for the average guy to not condone what is currently happening over there, because they are not victimized themselves the same way women are. I can't even begin to imagine the number of women in Iran who suffer from anxiety, depression, etc.
As far as I know, it has for some time been an ongoing campaign by female Iranian soccer fans and/or feminists to dress up as boys/men and sneak in at games. As a kind of silent protest. And the only way to get to see some ballgames. So, Iran allowing women at soccer games again is great news. A tiny victory it may seem, but apparently this prohibition has seemed so stupid to many women, it had become one of their favourite things to resist. And they won it seems.
Iran may grow extremist. But at least they lightened up when it came down to soccer!
Besides, separating women from men... sounds kind of like the situation at my local stadium. You have me and the other "raucous males" on one stand (beer discount stand basically) and the women and children on the next (kid's games in the half time, free balloons etc). I'm suppressed, I guess...
