GAUNTLET THROWN: President Bush called for the top 15 greenhouse gas producing nations, including the U.S., to set a goal for reducing the pollution by the end of 2008.

HOT TOPIC: The announcement could deflect criticism during next week's summit of leading industrialized nations, where global warming is sure to be discussed.

CLEARING THE AIR: The countries would begin talks this fall, but each would be able to develop its own strategy.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

We should just make another anthem. Something more fast paced and energizing with killer guitar riffs. Or make it like a rap song with a catchy beat. And revamp the flag. I like the country and its ideals and everything, but the flag is ridiculously lame. And I do know it is symbolic, but that doesn't change the fact that it looks quite stupid. Germany has an intense, flag that radiates power, yet it's simple at the same time. We should be able to come up with something.

I came to this country during kindergarten and i didn't know one word of english. I wasn't offended when i was asked to speak english, say the pledge of allegiance, and be a patriotic citizen. Yes, i think we should still print documents in multiple languages to make the transition easier for immigrants but eventually immigrants have to learn english. The most amazing thing is that the words were altered so they read,"It's time to break the chains." Immigrants should think of themselves not as a race but as Americans. Any american who refuses to say the pledge or respect the flage should be kicked out of this country.

I agree with you. I have been struggling with my own emotions on this subject. I am not politically conservative by nature, but find myself aggravated by a constant demand for changes in national symbols that I hold sacred. I think that you touched a cord with me when you mentioned how the new Spanish version of the national anthem adds the words "it is time to break the chains." What "chains are they talking about?" - the "chains guarding our unguarded borders?"

I am hoping that the projected boycott on Monday is less successful its organizers predict. This may reduce the strength of a backlash that I fear may be building against *all* immigrants.

I think I will do some extra shopping on Monday to try and kill the boycott.

What reasoning are you using? Just because someone doesn't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance he needs to be kicked out of his own country?
Last time I checked the USA was still about freedom.

i think the anthem should come in evey single language there is, that is more with the spirit of america.
I would want people who speak other languages to understand our anthem. America is one of the most diverse nations on earth (nationality wise), i think our anthem should reflect that

W8in:Not everyone is spoonfed with hollow patriotism like Americans are.

Ok...call me crazy but to me there is no question that the national anthem should just stay the way it was wrote and meant to be. If someone wants to sing it in another language GO FOR IT but do not call it the national anthem. I am from Texas but have lived in Germany for almost four years now and I can tell you it just irritates me seeing all the bull that is being talked about when there is so many more important things going on. I just don't understand why this is even something that is being considered.

I have sat here going over everyones comments and I believe everyone has a right to believe what they want. The comments that W8in has made just irritate me. Like I said I have been in Germany for a few years and being over here there culture is different but being here you have to adapt and do some things that you are used to like if you come to america you have to adapt to other cultures also not just shut down and be stubborn and expect everyone to follow you.

Agreed. And it's not even like English is the United States' official language. People act like it is, but they are incorrect.

I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at here, but if you think I'm going to sing the national anthem of a country I moved into just to adapt, you've got a wrong impression of the word 'adaptation'.

I don't expect people who move to the Netherlands to behave completely like a Dutchman. Adaptation is healthy where it comes to making sure you're not getting into any legal or social trouble. It doesn't mean you have to feel obliged to participate in patriotism.
