Bush Backs Brother Jeb for White House

advertisement

GAUNTLET THROWN: President Bush called for the top 15 greenhouse gas producing nations, including the U.S., to set a goal for reducing the pollution by the end of 2008.

HOT TOPIC: The announcement could deflect criticism during next week's summit of leading industrialized nations, where global warming is sure to be discussed.

CLEARING THE AIR: The countries would begin talks this fall, but each would be able to develop its own strategy.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

What a bad idea. Just how many Bushes have to be planted before they cover everything up.

Ah... maybe not "war criminals," but some have clearly been criminals none the less. Bootleg money makes them rich, then you have further mafia connections, dead people voting in Chicago, Chappaquidick, William Kennedy-Smith, Michael Skakel, and more. I also seem to remember the clusterf**k called the "bay of pigs" — clearly not a high point of American presidential decision-making. I don't think this record is much better than that of the Bushies.

I'm not a fan of either family, although I do have admiration for Robert Kennedy.

Leftist, let me state for the record I favor Kennedys over Bushes. That said, JFK did attempt to invade Cuba (in violation of the UN Charter), and did escalate Vietnam (again, in violation of the UN Charter). You can't accuse Bush of being a war criminal and then by the same standard aquit JFK.

Just for the record, the Bay of Pigs incident actually began under Eisenhower. The National Security Archives has a chronology of the events, as well as a collection of documents related to it. We had actually been bombing Cuba prior to JFK even being elected.

I agree, I don't think it would ever happen, even if he did run. There would be too much talk of a 'dynasty' and that has a tendency to rub people a little wrong. We have term limits for a reason and I think Americans in general would not respond well to another Bush running for President. Sure, he is a different guy, but he is still a Bush.

Political aristocracies in America? Oh no, somebody call George Washington!

Please. Get real. They happen all the time and will continue to do so. This aristocracy thing is a feature of human government since, like, FOREVER. Only way to get rid of it is to get rid of every single human who seeks to take advantage over his neighbor and even that won't work because evil people get born every day and AAAAAAIIIIEEEE!!!

This is why the foundin' fathers wanted all Americans to have guns and for states to have more rights relative to the federal gov't. Except Hamilton. Phooey on Hamilton.

DISCLAIMER: I think Thomas Paine was a neat guy.

By 146 BC the Romans were the only important power left in the Mediterranean Sea, and they controlled almost all of its coastline.

But there was trouble at home. First, two brothers named Cornelius Gracchus and Gaius Gracchus tried to get some of the Italian land given back to the poor people. But the rich aristocrats in the Senate didn't want to give the land back. In 133 and 123 BC the Senators themselves, with a lot of their followers, rushed up to the brothers and killed them (on two different occasions)! What is worse, nothing at all happened to those murdering Senators.

      aronoff,

The party of lincoln had left those roots by the time Teddy was in office. Teddy was a republican because he had always been one, but his party elite was one of big business and rich fat cats. That is the reason that when he ran against taft in the republican primary, even though he had more delegates, they put taft up for reelection.

Some people criticize countries of the 'Global South' for falling short on checks and balances that would counter nepotism in a political system. Moreover, many states had to pass an 'anti-nepotism- law to make sure this 'disease' won't happen again. We've already had Father and Son. Adding a Brother to this 'Dynasty' would be tragic!

Hmm... Stephen Colbert may have something to say about this:

Here's how it works: the president makes decisions. He's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Just put 'em through a spell check and go home.

Uh, Rob_NC, I have a feeling you didn't read what you're responding to. The term "jackboots" which seems to have set you off came from a comment in which Vulgrin referred to the "morality police." The basis for that comment was Senator Santorum's sanctimonious and hypocritical pronouncements regarding various "moral" issues. No "American president" was mentioned. Incidentally, the only high-profile use of the term "jackboot" was by President Bush's father, who used the term to refer to federal firearms agents.

don't like it then don't use such defamatory partisan rhetoric

Again, Rob_NC, I didn't use the term. Get it? Wasn't me. And yet, your response is to make a claim about MY character. I respect your conservative opinion, Rob_NC, so I'm not going to insult conservatives in general, nor am I going to insult you personally. How about you return the favor? A mark of maturity and reason, not to mention "class," is the ability not to sweat the little things, and the sense to realize they're all little things.

You begin to make coherent conservative arguments without stooping to personal attacks and insults and you may just earn a reputation as someone who's opinion is worth reading. Keep making it personal, and you'll end up with the reputation you deserve.

PS: I think you may be having a problem with your keyboard. The paren keys "(" and ")" seem to be repeating, and either your shift key or your capslock appears to be sticking.

The point here is, Rob_NC, that you responded to what you perceived to be a slap at the President by making a baseless and personal attack against all liberals. While I'm sure that would probably earn you some points over at redstate, powerline, or free republic, around here it's pretty much just going to get you a reputation as a troll, and not a lot of respect.

I'm trying to let you know that there is no need for it to come to that. If you have conservative opinions which you would like to express as a way of trying to influence other people, there are plenty of people here who would like to hear them.

Write an article about some of the great features of your conservative ideology. You'll get comments, and you'll have a chance to exchange points of view with a variety of people - some who agree with you and some who don't. If you just want to troll the comments looking for people to insult, one of the conservative blogs is really the best place for that. Doing it here won't increase the amount of respect you get, and it doesn't help the other conservatives here either. Just let that stuff go, man.

You can be assured that if Vulgrin went around making insulting remarks about "the conservatives" or "the 'right'" all of the time, he'd develop the same type of reputation that you are working on. A mark of maturity is the ability to sometimes just let it go, and to avoid the temptation to insult other people just because you feel that someone you admire has been insulted. It's a website, it's not a schoolyard. Get smarter here.

Might as well. What this country needs at a time like this is consistent leadership. Neither Hillary nor anyone else from the Democratic party could successfully take the reigns from Bush at this point. The entire political system has been rearranged and the only ones who understand the inner workings are the current administration. Due to the incredible amount of secrecy involved, we can not afford to trust anyone else to the position. Any Democrat would reveal the inner workings for political advantage. "oooh! look at all the sneaky, illegal stuff they've been doing behind closed doors!" All momentum towards global sovereignty would bottleneck. There's no way anyone but the current administration can continue the task at hand. It doesn't matter how you vote. The future is coming.

You've got it all wrong, Orwell. What we need to do is hand over the election to someone who looks like a Democrat, but is actually on the inside. That way, people will setlle back, breathe a sigh of relief, and not question for a few years...

I much as I like Governor Jeb Bush, he will not run in '08 and should not run ever. It just sends a bad message keeping the presidency "in the family." On the other hand, I would trade the 12 years of George Bushes for 8 of Jeb Bush in a second. Jeb Bush's politics are rather different from his brothers, and tend far more towards the more traditional conservative than the neoconservative and "compassionate conservative" George W. Bush.
