Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This article must have stayed on the Newsvine page for at least 30 seconds! That's criminal. One of the most important topics of the Congressional year and only five people voted it up. Newsvine needs to change their priority scheme.

      Oops, sorry for the dupe.

As for the speech, it was a very good compromise between the bill passed by the House that made illegal entry into the US a felony and the bill under consideration in the Senate that gives illegal aliens amnesty. A lot of details remain to be worked out, but as far as I can see, there is no amnesty provision in the president's proposal.

His point about a comprehensive bill is extremely important. We cannot stop these immigrants with simple physical force. If we make it very, very difficult for them to find work without proper documentation, and we stop the "catch and release" program, the rush to the US will dry up. That will leave only drug smugglers and terrorists for the Border Patrol to deal with.

Rather than wait until more Patrol can be hired and trained, it's reasonable to get the most use of the existing, Spanish-speaking patrolmen. That's where the Guard comes in. They can take over non-enforcement duties and augment the eyes and ears of the Border Patrol.

Great program. It's tragic that neither house of Congress came up with it and pretty sad that it took the president so long to step up to the problem.
