Why is it that this administration believes that all problems are solved by throwing soldiers at the issue. "More troops! that'll fix the problem!" ... That is sounding less and less like the country that I grew up in and more like the countries I remember us fighting against (Russia, East Germany, China, etc ..). That scares me. Pretty soon it will be, "Wow. Those reporters are doing too good of a job ... Send in the TROOPS!"
Kick all the illegals out when they go to apply for citizenship. I support immigration policies like those that my Great Grandparents faced when coming to this country for the first time through Ellis Island. Be able to speak English, have skills/work lined up, etc ...
I'm fine with people wanting to come to this country to work and live, we are a country born from immigrants whether it be England/german/italy/africa/mexico/whatever. I'm not fine with them singing our national anthem in something other than English, if I moved to Mexico I wouldn't sing theirs in English. I am not fine with them just walking across the border and asking for help, those are called refugees and last time i checked, Mexico wasn't running its people over with tanks.
Well, what is the National Guard for if not to "guard our nation?"
That being said, we're all fooling ourselves if we think that any politician is really going to try to do something about this. After all, illegal immigrants come here, and make babies that grow up to be voters. The party who is the nicest to them now is the party that they will vote for when they grow up.
As I understand it, the National Guard is to serve in times of crisis to guard our nation. Bush is superceding authority here, since in peacetime (and we aren't at war with Mexico), localities have control over National Guard troops, not the President.
That said, this is a complex issue. I can't fault him for attempting to find a solution that will please everyone. Like every President in recent history, he's looking to please everyone involved, because going too far in either direction of immigration control runs the risk of alienating a large voting block. I'd prefer he show more of a spine and come up with a strong solution, one way or another, rather than playing it half and half. Being a man known for hard-headed resolve and not caring what the opposition thinks, it would be nice to see that work consistently.
Next speech from Vicente Fox at Tijuana: "Mr. Bush: I have a request for you. TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!"
Serious question: Where are we gonna get these National Guard troops? I thought they were all holding down the fort in Iraq? Or do we get a draft to free those guys up for duty along our duskier border? Meanwhile, all you Canucks can come on down! We're not looking at YOU guys! You're white!
(Disclaimer: I am not a racist. My wife and kids are Hispanic. Although I like the word "Mexican" better and "Native American Who Happens to Speak Spanish" best of all.)
