William Kates, Associated Press Writer

Jennifer Johnson, secretary of Greensprings Natural Cemetery, pounds in a marker as Mary Woodsen, left, cemetery president, talks with Susan Thomas, cemetery treasurer, about the 93-acre cemetery in Newfield, N.Y., April 29, 2006. The cemetery is the first natural cemetery preserve in New York and one of just a handful in the United States. At Greensprings, bodies cannot be embalmed or otherwise chemically preserved. damn i once told someone i wanted to do that as a child and they told me it was illegal...at the time the only place that offered to return my body to the cycle of life was a monestary in tibet, that would feed me to the birds..I guess teh person that told me that was wrong, but i am glad i dont have to go to tibet to dispose of my body the way i want it disposed.

At Greensprings, where a plot costs $500 plus a $350 fee to dig the grave, bodies cannot be embalmed or otherwise chemically preserved.

If you dig the grave and place the body in yourself, is the $350 fee waived?

Where have I been? I didn't want to be embalmed or put on display with fake makeup...but I didn't really want to be cremated either. This is wonderful, I didn't know it was actually legal. I always said I wanted to be buried in the horse pasture, maybe now I can. J
