This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Someone has blood on their hands and someone has to pay for this. And history has taught us that negotiating with these guys does not work!

Its a bit difficult to avoid negotiating when your basic suspicion is that the people behind this are funded by a nuclear power.

If cold war history did teach anything then it was that the Soviets and the West both loved life more than mutual annihilation through a nuclear war. That's why they either stood apart or negotiated.

The same thing is happening here.

Everyone knows that India got bombed because they are friends of George Bush and because of their huge support of the war on terror.

It's sad days like these where we see such a despicable exhibition of human violence that we are reminded why we are fighting the war we are fighting. That's right, a war on an unknown entity, a war on a noun, an abstract movement which probably can never be exterminated. And a war that must be fought.

Isn't it time India did something about this periodic blasts/attacks.

Don't pin this on India. I doubt the government just allows these attacks to happen. Fighting these sorts of attacks are hard because for any number of attempted strikes that get squashed there are always one or two that succeed. This one succeeded.

Always remember (and never forget): In every day, in every way, blame America first.

There are historical reasons for this attack happening, not just India's support of America's War on "Terror".

It is not intentional. There are no 7/11's in India so the date would mean absolutely nothing. I seriously doubt they chose the date to amuse ignorant people that associate India with a 7/11.

There's no need to justify one form of hatred and intolerance to condemn another, Kai. There is no need for us to wonder what the terrorists "feel." They "feel" the same way that you obviously do, only they feel that way about a different group of people. The need to "understand" the terrorists is no more important nor less important than the need to "understand" you.

Crazy muslims do this stuff, they're nuts and out of control. Me simply stating the obvious doesn't make me intolerant. See that's what's funny, is that my comment in no way was expressing any hatred, intolerance, racism, yada yada.

This part seems a little intolerant to me.

            Crazy whackjob muslims.

But that's probably just me. I probably just misinterpreted what you were saying. To me, it seemed like you were saying that you you consider Muslims to be crazy whackjobs. From your second comment, I believe I understand that you were simply pointing out that crazy whackjobs commited these crimes, and you were just mentioning as an aside that they just happen to be Muslim. Now that you clarify, I don't know how I could have believed that just because you wrote "Crazy whackjob muslims" that you were somehow intolerant of muslims. Thanks for clearing that up.

So, just to clarify further, Kai, are you saying that you feel that ones religion is irrelevant as far as any propensity to commit an act of terrorism is concerned? That seems like a completely reasonable position to me, but leaves me wondering why you even brought it up.

Edward, as I'm sure you realize, posting such lists adds absolutely no value to this conversation. I have reported the comments as such, and I would encourage you to be a little reasonable here. If you can't find a way to express yourself without simply clogging up a thread, perhaps you should reconsider the strength of your argument.

Is it an argument? Is it a debate? Or is it a massacre?

A good friend of mine was visiting France and was chilling outside a cafe, sitting next to a table with two Islamic students who were smoking. She asked them to stop, since she's allergic to smoke, and they said, "We don't have to do anything you tell us. You can't tell me anything. Islam will conquer the world soon enough and we'll have your head."

I think, if we're comparing extremist Muslims to extremist Christians, the biggest difference is that (in my experience/reading) extremist Muslim groups often have a steadfast belief that violence against those they perceive as wrong/enemies earns them immediate and permanent reward, whereas most Christian extremists seem to be more focused on trying to bring the world to their philosophy through campaigns of intolerance, and preaching. I'm not sure if it's because a lot of the more extreme Christian groups reside in 1st world countries who have little or no tolerance for terrorist-like activities or not, but that seems likely to be a factor.

Extremely interesting story, Edward. What did you take away from that? Did this story convince you that all Muslims are intent on killing you? Did you conclude from the insufferable rudeness of two young people that the world is in danger of being conquered by the Islamic horde? I'll tell you, some of those Muslims certainly are hyperbolic, alright. I wonder if anything similarly hateful or intolerant has ever been uttered by a Christian, a Jew, or a follower of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

If there were a Christian who had the unmitigated audacity to say such a thing, would it be logical for someone who overheard it to conclude that Christians were a barbaric bunch of cutthroats intent on conquering the world? What if you knew that Christians had also been known to commit unspeakable acts from time to time? If I posted a list of all of the atrocities committed by Christians around the world in the past, say, 5 months, would you reach a similar conclusion about Christians as you seem to have reached about Muslims?

What if I expanded that list to include the actions of Christian missionaries acting in, say, Africa or America in forcibly converting and subjugating entire populations in the name of Christianity? Would that evoke in you feelings of hatred for Christians? Would you even consider that perhaps the issue isn't as black and white as you may think it is? Would it help you to realize that, just as you don't want to be tarred with the massacres historically carried out by a few Christians, perhaps it is equally wrong to tar Muslims with the crimes committed by a few Muslims?

No matter the context, Edward, holding an entire group of people responsible for the actions of a minority is wrong. If some crazy whackjob Muslim blows you to simithereens out of a sense of vengeance for the crimes committed by other people like you, it's wrong. If you hold non-crazy non-whackjob Muslims responsible for crimes committed by other Muslims, it is equally wrong.

              Kai

I'm pretty sure you're not claiming that no Christians have ever blown sh*t up, are you? Because I don't think that a propensity for violence in support of hatred and intolerance is an exclusively Muslim tendency.

Please see my comment above about the liberals resorting to the tired and irrelevant old "Christianity had a bloodied past so that makes it as bad as radical islam" argument.

See, that's what's funny. The argument isn't that "Christianity is as bad as radical Islam," it's that "intolerance and bigotry towards Muslims based on the religious beliefs a a small group of Muslims is no more reasonable nor logical than intolerance and bigotry towards Christians based on the actions of a small group of Christians." Read that carefully, the difference between that and your characterization may seem subtle to you, but it is significant. Unless you think it is reasonable for people to think of you as a bloodthirsty barbaric cutthroat based on the actions of a few people with whom you share a religion (or country of origin, or skin color, or shoe size, or ethnic heritage), you are wise not to express your disregard for other groups in a similar way.

As do I. The facts are proof positive that muslims are much more prone to acts such as this vs Christianity. Terrorism isn't limited to "a small number of estranged muslims". It's a widespread problem and large population of people. Even if a small % when compared to the larger muslim population as a whole, it is still a very large number of people, and a very serious threat and problem in the world today. Can't deny that.

Any denial or dismissal of these facts is merely being ignorant to reality and the truth. You can be tolerant of them all you want, embrace them even as they're spewing their hate for you. I'll be the one standing way back from the blast.

That's not even a little bit accurate, Kai. The facts prove nothing. Do you believe that a similar list could not be compiled of heinous crimes committed by Christians? Do you believe that I couldn't compile such a list of people who share your ethnic background, or your religion? Crimes are committed by criminals, and the "fact" is that religion is absolutely no indicator of criminality. Implying that a person's religion makes them more (or less) likely to commit a heinous crime is not only ignorant and narrowminded, it is blatant, reprehensible bigotry. Spewing such bigotry may earn you a few backslaps from other likeminded people, but it does absolutely nothing to advance your weak and poorly informed argument.

Wrong again man. The facts are there that "blatantly" spell out the "fact" that most terrorist acts in the world are commited by muslims. This is not merely a coincidence in the same vein as saying "they all had 2 eyes so eyeballs are of no relevance". The extremists are following their religion, and they are doing it in the NAME OF ALLAH, so the religion has a MAJOR role to play in this scenario. To ignore the religion as a factor is blind ignorance.

Calvin, I do apologize for the sheer volume of the comments because they certainly take up an enormous amount of space. At the same time, I do not apologize for trying to hammer home that there is nothing isolated about attacks that are inspired or carried out by Islamic terrorists.

I don't personally have any Islamic friends. I really wish I did, really, really wish I did so I could pick their brain and just try to understand something in all this mess. It's not easy because I sincerely doubt that we understand them and they obviously don't understand us. But at the same time, I'm not just gonna lay down and take it when the facts are plain and in front of us.

See, that's the funny part. The extremists are most definitely not "following their religion." I'm not surprised that you don't realize that, as you've proven yourself today to be extraordinarily closeminded and intolerant. As many people have pointed out many times before, the actions of extremist Muslims who commit heinous crimes "in the name of Allah" are no more in line with the teachings of Islam than the actions of Christian fundamentalists who blow up Federal buildings, bomb abortion clinics, or kill physicians "in the name of God" are in line with Christian teachings. The fact that you choose to ignore this obvious and clear truth in favor of hatred and bigotry does little to strengthen any point you are trying to make. I suspect that it isn't very important to you to make a reasoned and logical argument, but if it were, you'd be failing.

Actually man, I've been around the world, I've spent time on the ground in Muslim places (afghanistan, dubai, india, etc). I've seen it first hand. I've seen the fear in women's eyes just walking on the street. I've seen the hatred for westerners in the eyes of the men. You are correct that not all muslims are evil and follow this extremist doctrine... but the problem is that there are many, MANY who do. Even if it's just 10% of the entire population, that's enough for alarm.

The thing that gets me is there is no outcry from the non-extremist muslim community to stop these heinous acts and put an end to this "misuse" of their "religion of peace". Simply silence. Quiet agreeance or silent support, if you will. Perhaps Islam just needs a serious look at their PR campaign, because the line is so blurred between what is and what isn't an extremist muslim. They all look the same until one blows up on a subway next to you. Until that revolution within happens and it's truly proven that these are just a few bad seeds, I will continue to believe that Islam at its roots is a religion of hate, intolerance, oppression and murder. There are too many occurrences and too much blood spilt around the world for this to simply be a few estranged muslim wanna-bes.

It's not 10%. It's not anywhere near 10%. There are 6 billion Muslims worldwide. The problem is not people who hate western ideas or western culture. It would be hopelessly naive to think that every member of every culture in the world should somehow be expected to approve of western culture. The problem is people who are willing to become criminals in support of that hatred.

You clearly posses a hatred for Muslims and for Muslim culture, yet you are not moved by your hatred to become a suicide bomber or a bloodthirsty cutthroat. If you were moved in that way, you'd be much worse than the vast majority of the people you hate. People who are Muslims, who practice a religion you clearly don't understand, are nonetheless people, no less human than you are, and no less deserving of the benefit of the doubt. Criminals are criminals, and deserve to be hunted down and treated like criminals. Muslims who are not criminals, however, just like Christians who are not criminals, deserve every bit of the same respect that you do.

Indeed, nearly all Muslims, regardless of what you may believe as a result of having spent time in Muslim "places," have less hatred for you than you demonstrate for them, and of the small fraction who hate you and I and others for our beliefs or our culture, only a tiny fraction will ever feel moved to become a criminal as a result. If you believe that it is an easy move from hatred to criminality and murder, how can we be certain that you are not capable of the same?

I'll step up and say I see your point and its well made. Very clearly spoken and I appreciate that.

From my viewpoint however, what is the determining factor to the rest of the world that separates terrorists from standard muslims? I'm not talking of once they blow up a building then boom they're a terrorist, that's a given. I mean what outward determining factor is in place to separate in the minds of the world why they should trust muslims, given that the regular muslims aren't condemning these atrocities and trying to distance themselves from it. The name of islam is tarnished, and there's no public movement to save the name from these extremists. As it stands right now, there is nothing to form an opinion on a muslim over until they blow themselves up. It's the ultimate stealth. Hide in the silent majority until called upon.

The Christian community obviously outcries every time someone blows up a clinic, etc in the name of "God". The Christian religion is plainly based on love and forgiveness. Therefore common people can understand that those flavors of extremists are obviously not doing it in the true name of the religion. The bloodied past of Christianity happened many hundreds of years ago. The current theology has nothing to do with death and destruction.

Contrast that with Islam, which actually IS based on the elimination of non-believers. We see throngs of muslims in the streets calling for the beheading of those who insult islam, daily bombings and murders in the name of allah, etc. It's hard to come to the conclusion that all who follow the religion can't be bad at some level when there is such a presence of the "bad seeds" in the world today with no attempt from within to stop it.

                    Thoughts?

Jay - of course you're right. I was in a hurry and read those statistics wrong. I'm sorry. It doesn't change my argument, which is that the total number of militant extremist Muslims who are likely to be moved to commit violent acts is a tiny percentage of Muslims on the whole. Kai seemed to be following a line of argument which asserted that the number might be as high as 10%, which, given your more accurate figure would amount to around 100 - 150 million militant Muslim extremists. I suspect that the number of Muslims who would actually be moved to commit violent acts of terror is likely much smaller than 100 million. Anyway, sorry for the confusion - I obviously got my fingers in gear before my brain was fully engaged. Thanks for pointing it out.

Kai, thanks for the reply. I do have some thoughts, which I'd be happy to share. I should probably say at the outset that I'm not a religious person of any stripe, Muslim, Christian, Bhuddist, or other. I don't have any particular fondness for one set of religious beliefs over another, and my opinions aren't based on a deep knowledge of religious dogma, but rather on a general understanding that all religions have certain things in common, and certain very similar threads that can be teased out.

I completely understand your frustration here - terrorism works. It causes people to question their relationships with other people, it makes people live in fear and suspicion, and it predisposes people to accept restrictions on their way of life and on their own liberties which they would never consider otherwise. Knowing that the most dramatic and horrendous acts of terror being committed in our time are committed primarily by members of a single religion makes it easy to partition off a segment of society to focus our fear and hatred on. Because we live in fear that we will become victims of a terrorist attack, it may even seem quite logical to simply isolate ourselves from that group of people and kill any which are found in our midst. Indeed, this would be one way to deal with the threat. The negative consequences of doing so, in my opinion, far outweigh any benefit which could be gained. As you point out, it is a difficult task to locate terrorists before they attack. I'm not sure exactly how to identify them either, but I am quite certain that any sort of widespread discriminatory practices aimed at the entire Muslim population is not likely to produce the desired effect.

I would have to respectfully disagree with a couple of points here. Although clinic bombings have been quite intermittent, I don't recall the "Christian community" raising any outcry whatsoever in the wake of any of those bombings, or in the wake of the murders of physicians which have taken place in the name of Christianity. I'll certainly give you that some clergy members have condemned acts such as these, but the exact same thing can be said of the Muslim community. You may not have heard that there are many moderate Muslim clerics who issue fatwas against violence and terrorism, but I certainly have. Does every Muslim run out in the streets and demonstrate every time an act of terrorism takes place? Certainly not, nor does every Christian run out in the streets and demonstrate every time an act of Christian terrorism takes place. I don't recall hearing a big outcry from the Christian community after the Oklahoma City bombing. Indeed, if anything I recall that numerous militia groups which were spotlighted by the press in the aftermath behaved as though they shared absolutely no responsibility for Christian terrorism. Note that I'm not saying that I believe that they should have necessarily done so, just that I think they had approximately the same amount of responsibility to condemn Christian terrorism that Muslims have to condemn Islamist terrorism.

When someone like Pat Robertson issues a call for the assassination of a foreign leader, there is no outcry. President Bush doesn't immediately issue a statement condemning Pat Robertson and his followers. When Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson issued a joint statement blaming homosexuals and abortionists for the attacks of September 11, 2001 I don't recall any public demonstrations condemning them, nor any statement from the government disavowing their statements. Maybe it isn't the responsibility of the government or of the "Christian community" to do so, but why would we expect the Islamic community to behave any differently?

Contrast that with Islam, which actually IS based on the elimination of non-believers. We see throngs of muslims in the streets calling for the beheading of those who insult islam, daily bombings and murders in the name of allah, etc. It's hard to come to the conclusion that all who follow the religion can't be bad at some level when there is such a presence of the "bad seeds" in the world today with no attempt from within to stop it.

To some extent, Kai, we see what we want to see. As I mentioned before, we can't expect every other culture on the planet to appreciate our culture. We see ourselves as generous, intelligent, respectful, and moral. Like it or not, though, many (possibly most, there are more every day) people around the world see western culture, and specifically American culture, as being belligerent, miserly, disrespectful and immoral. I think they're wrong, personally, and I think that they simply don't know about a lot of things that I know about which lead me to believe in those positive attributes. No amount of me insisting that they simply don't understand, though, will change their view. I hope that it will change over time, but in the meantime the fact is, not everybody is going to like us. That doesn't mean, however, that everybody who dislikes us, even the ones that irrationally hate us, even the vast majority of the ones who may participate in anti-western demonstrations, are subject to becoming terrorists.

I would take issue also with your characterization of Islam. As I mentioned, I'm no expert on Islam, but I have done a little studying on the subject and I don't believe that Islam is based on the "elimination of non-believers." I realize that there are many people in the world today who consider themselves to be experts on Islam who have taken passages from the Koran and interpreted them in such a way as to provide "proof" that Islam has violence at its heart. I would only point out that, comparing Christianity to Islam, one could certainly do the same with the Bible. Over the years, in fact, Christian fundamentalists have done exactly that in order to justify some truly horrific deeds. I realize that you consider that to be all in the past, but I see absolutely no reason to believe that, if Christian leaders like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell can be perfectly comfortable with the idea of killing people because of their religious, political or societal beliefs, it couldn't happen again.

                                1. an all out war with pak means a nuclear war.. do you understand that?

                                2. There are many many such occurrences (on a smaller scale) in India on a daily basis, mostly in Kashmir.. I am sure that the Indians are running out of patience now.. they cannot do much about Pak because they are a very strong US ally... this is really ironic given that the Pak Intelligence service actively funds and supports the Taliban...

                                3. Pak is in a very tenuous position right now.. the islamic fundamentalists and militants want to wage war on both the west as well as India.. on the other hand, Musharraf, head of the military, made a shrewd decision to support the US after 9/11.. this actually saved Pak's ass since the US would have extended the axis of evil to include them otherwise... the problem is that most of Musharraf's power base (the military) and a significant portion of the population are inclined to support the militants in both wars...

                                4. There have been numerous assassination attempts on Musharraf's life by the islamic militants.. India (and the US) knows that he is the key to maintaining stability in Pak.. any action against Pak at this point by either country will help the militants gain power...

At some point soon, Musharraf will have to add more skin in the game.. he cannot pander to both the militants as well as America for much longer.. the future of Pak rests heavily on that pivotal point in time... The only country that can influence Pak at this point is the US.. so in some sense, it is up to the US to push Pak to truly pick a side, not just mouth the words of support and be a paper ally...

Unfortunately this issue is political.Bombay has a lot of muslims and after incidents like this everybody suffers.
The terrorists have to take a step back and check what they have achieved by their means.
                                Their approach is loose loose.

Because people died! Because this is a horrific, terrible, heartbreaking incident that affects human beings! Because we are a global community here on Newsvine - not just the US or the "Western" world! It is on the front page because it is our responsibility, as humans, to care!

                                      Jay Butler

Edwards lists place the terror in the proper context. They are valuable to this thread.

This Bombay incident is not an isolated one.

Jay, a murder was recently committed in a town not far from where I live by an American of German descent who attends a Baptist church regularly. I'd like to compile a list of heinous crimes committed by persons with similar characteristics so that I may be vigilant against such crimes, and to point out to people who may be unaware exactly which types of people they should be most suspicious of.. Where should I start, Jay? White people? German-Americans? Men? Baptists? I'm pretty sure that if I had a list of all of the horrific acts committed by people who attend Christian churches, it would be of not insignificant length. Would noting the length of that list have any relevance? Would it serve to highlight the need to be particularly suspicious of Christians, or of German-Americans, or of men?

That list was insane. And unnecessary, as you candidly noted.

Everyone knows people are being blown up. It didn't start today, nor will it end today. All we can do is realize we will never be able to understand the losses on such a great magnitude unless we lose someone to such an event.

Its worse than that Brad. Bin-Laden promised this and the Russian backed Heckmartyer Brigade would have done this in direct response to Condi's visit about the F-16 fighters. There will be many more of these bombs if the Indians continue to draw closer to the US. See two more Israeli troops were captured. By Lebanon. This is defiantly in cahoots with Syria. Russia is Syria's NO.1 Alli
