Interesting points in the article..
1. (it will be built and operated by a U.S.-Spanish consortium);
2. Cintra-Zachry is paying $7.2 billion to develop the first segment. For that, it will get to operate the road and collect tolls for years to come. It is part of a growing privatization trend in the United States.
Like it or not the Supreme Court descion last year was the correct decision. It recognized that private interests can be for the good of the public. It also left it up to the state to determine what is deemed best for the public when it comes to private interests regarding land. This falls in with the conservative mantra of States Rights and Responsibilities. Oddly enough it was the Conservatives that hated the ruling and cursed the "liberal" supreme court. Even more odd it is almost always Republicans like Gov. Rick Perry that have pushed the use of private intrests to build things like this.

Nope, sorry it hasnt been used for this superficial "justification". It has been used to rid people of their homes for the benefit of contractors and realtors.

Andrew,
I noticed that you did not include the rest of the statement in your retort. You know the part about leaving it up to the States to decide if the private interest was good for the community or not. With out the Supreme Court decsision the States would not be able to do this. You should be ecstatic over this rulling. Don't try to demagogue the issue.

Typical short sightedness. People pushing this porkbarrel project are the same who scream about illegal immigrants. This hiway would just make it faster for migrant workers, illegal or otherwise, to get into the heartland and disappear.

Privatization CAN be a good thing. It can also be as much of a disasterous abomination as massive government. Secret contracts and agreements which result in the theft of people's property, especially when financed by foreign concerns, have no place in a democracy, however, and supporters of this train wreck should be voted OUT of office.

This highway project in Texas is probably the first segment---and trial balloon---of the North American Union project that BushCo. has up his sleeve, and that very few people have heard about. Just Google North American Union and read the first two entries, from Human Events Online. The articles, by Jerome R. Corsi, relate the whole thing, including maps. If this is real---and Corsi shows that Bush, Vicente Fox, and former Canadian prime minister Paul Martin have agreed to it---we Americans (as well as Canadians and Mexicans) are about to lose our national sovereignty and become just one big, borderless land mass for corporate profit and unrestricted travel and settlement among our respective countries. How's that for "homeland security" and our proud American identity and culture?

At last, someone has finally picked up the story on their blog. I have been writing posts about it on AOL's message boards for weeks, nobody has shown any interest. Many Cons have claimed that it is just another conspiracy theory contrived by the "Loony Left."
What needs to be noted is that this "Bush Superhighway" is a by-product of the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, " as is the "North American Union." This closely held to the vest initiative enacted by Bush is just another action taken by Bush-Co to circumvent and subvert the US Constitution by engaging in law making and treaty negotiating without US Congressional involvement and approval.
Bush likes to label his illegal law making as "initiatives." That how we have ended up paying billions of dollars to the Mega Churches popping up all over America like Walmarts. Someone has to stop this man from giving America away, it's gone beyond ridiculous.
If the "Big Dig" in Boston is any indication of how massive public/private works projects are constructed today, we're in for quite a ride and certainly not a free one. Why not just pave over the whole damn country and let everyone drive wherever they want.
In all seriousness, this type of gradual privatization and apprpopriation of the resources and services of a country, 100 years ago was called "colonialism." The US is slowly devolving into a developing nation. The lack of social services, weak civilian government, disrespect for stated rights and privileges, over reliance on police and military coercion to enforce domestic and foreign agendas, high levels of consumption- low levels of production and the decline in the middle class, all spell "Third World" country.

Hells bells, you just dont get it do ya. We dont need no border control or homeland security. All dem terrorists are bottled up in Iraq. We love those mexicans. Heck, we gotta be sure we rich folks can help out all them po folks by let'n dem clean our toilets, mowing our lawns and taken care of our youngun's. (they are real talented people you know). Dis ear highway and such will let them do their job and get back home in mexico wher they belong, oh, I mean get back to their families. Texas is movin towards higher and higher speed limits too so they can go even further to these here inportant jobs. Suppose them damn liberals will get in the way though. We was real good an slaven and that got all bolix'd up too. Damn liberals.

Lol, of course you blame the liberals, you're from Texas. Anyways, on a serious note, its not the Liberals taking the land to build this highway. Its you damn conservatives and big business founded campaings/lives that are building this monster. They are just trying to make it easier to bring in those the cheap foreign products/labor we American's love so much.

modernone - your excellent satire got it right, save one feature. The rich in Texas speak perfectly fine English with a patrician twang - not this ignorant redneck hillbilly broken English. The working class rednecks who might speak bad English such as in your post are the ones whose wages/jobs are going down the drain, who are suffering from the rich oil and gas (and other big military/industrial interests) corpocracy investor class attempting to turn this country into a colony with outsourced labor whether in India or in Texas with illegal aliens and of course, with as FEW health, safety, and environmental/global warming values in place as possible.

Sorry proevolution48, I mis-characterized the speech but its hard to capture the subtle in satire. What you say is correct.
The problem with the rich is they may be rich but have no clue about the impact of their life style and lack of respect for others on our country. The corporation rules. Rules government, rules the work force, and rules our health care and well being. Our "leaders" over the past 25 years have fostered a new ruling class who promote ideas such as this highway to boost their profits on the backs of the American workers and taxpayers. It is no longer the liberals against the conservatives. They both spout nonsense to get an uneducated constituency to vote for them but it is the wealth and uninhibited power that drives both. It is sad and will be the demise of our society. We have become a corporatist aristocracy. Hope you got out of the way, they have already plowed through.
so, let's stop this thing from paving us a new spine
The far libertarian Right's media was the first place I saw this story, several weeks ago. I hadn't seen it since until the Huffington Post linked to the article above, some time this evening. We need to get people's attention with this news. People won't like this project. It can be attacked for so many different reasons -- loss of US sovereignty, anti-democratic back-room deals, property rights violations, environmental devastation, simple greed -- the key is for people to find out about it.
I'll forward it to lots of news and community organizations. Maybe you could, too?

how about taking the money to fund a super intranational public transportation system. with all the worries and talk about "feeling it at the pump," and energy independence, not to mention the concerns raised about US sovereignty by this specific project, it seems that everyone is ignoring the fact that we need to start introducing more long-term, economically and environmentally wise choices for transportation. this project should be dismissed entirely and replaced by something that will carry our grandchildren and their progeny to their destinations, not bury their futures.

its all about cheap labor, goods unloaded in Mexico, not by our longshoremen, driven by mexican drivers , not teamsters, get rid of the unions and the job classifications, all the workers are now "management" and don't qualify for O/T.especially true for cops, nurses, and firemen. now why does this Republican administration and this Republican house and senate hate us so damn much?
people better turn off american idol and start paying attention to what our government is doin to the middle class. like student loans up by 300% the middle class is getting to become fewer and fewer.
The United States is about to be a power in decline, with our roads and bridges and tunnels built by Amerians but now owned by a holding company in france. strong prosperous country indeed, were not even getting the tolls. If you end up with any money left, don't put it in a bank that is affiliated with MR. Neil Bush, we all remember that fleeseing, don't we? How in hell could we actually elect these people?
they are only writing laws that corporations tell them too. To many people are voting the "family Values" crap. If this bunch has any values they are far different than yours or mine.
and our debt to communist China will probably be the anchor for our last voyage.

Some video of citizen comments in some of the counties of this latest round of sham TTC hearings is at salon.glenrose.net - search on video to see Tarrant/Parker/Hood/Johnson and Bosque. ..
Who wanted it? The politicos and business men. Almost without exception, every citizen DOES NOT WANT IT.
LOOK up every politician that voted this travesty in, and then VOTE THEM OUT and put in people who are AGAINST this. That includes Fred Head, David Van Os, and Hank Gilbert, who are all running to put some clean politics that are FOR Texans.
No matter what, though, Perry MUST GO.

This is unbelievable. If this is someone's idea of the future I'm glad I won't see it, and the rest of you-if you think Iraq was a bad idea for people but great for the Haliburton types [you know who, some from Texas],well you aint seen nothing yet.
If this gets pushed through then it will spell the end for the teamsters. It's no surprise to me that this hasn't received much attention. All I can say is just wait til this becomes more common knowledge among the sheeple, particularly those it will affect the most. I have visions of complete highway shutdowns across the country as teamster drivers simply park their rigs on the highways.
I heard about this "secret super highway" a couple of months ago, and immediately emailed Lou Dobbs' Show, since Lou has been so vocal about illegal immigration from Mexico. This secret thoroughfare is an instrument of the neocons to end U.S. sovereignty and create a new regional entity (U.S.- Mex-Can). It will allow a cheap venue for Chinese goods to enter the country and bypass surveillance and the Longshoremen's union. It will also allow easy entry for Mexican illegals to infiltrate America and Canada. Unfortunately, Lou didn't post my email. I've also emailed U.S. senators and congressmen to protest this land grab. Tell everyone you know to protest this outrageous scheme.
Have we mentioned that the Mexican portion of this super highway will terminate at Mexico's ports - bypassing our own east and west coast ports? So our coastal port cities, Seattle, SFO, LA, etc.(lots of blue there) will be less essential to trade and the middle of the country now mostly empty red states will reap the benefits of increased trade activity(=increases in population = increases in congressional representation)
"People get the government they deserve." Just keep your heads in the sand America, it makes it easy for us to take it up the a** from corporate power.
Hello,
What this is all about is bypassing the union workers and shuttling all of our imports to Kansas City for import inspection, laying bare our already impossibly porous borders and import centers. Not only that, but it will mean the government/corporations (better known as BushCo) stealing millions of acres of privately owned farms and land in the biggest eminent domain theft/scam in history. Not to mention the lining of private corporate pockets, most of which aren't even American. This way Bush and companies can just bypass the ports of inspection and labor unions, even further making our borders open to terrorist activity.
Here is what is going on that BushCo wants to pull as one of their November surprises:
THIS EGRIGOUS BUSHCO LAND GRAB MUST BE STOPPED NOW!!!!! THEY WANT OUR FARMS, OUR LAND AND OUR AMBER WAVES OF GRAIN!!!!!
I learned while in Kansas City recently that plans are well under way to establishing a major hub for the super highway from Mexico to Canada in that city.
