Is it just me or does the phrase "unarmed military observer" sound like a name for a glorified news anchor?

I think they report back to the UN and their home countries. These are soldiers, (at least the Canadian that was killed was), but they're apparently unarmed. Also, I doubt the reports are done on news-style video. ;)

Soldiers unarmed are just boxers.

and a second near the village of Maroun al-Ras, where Hezbollah guerrilla gunfire wounded an observer on July 23

Did Kofi Annan mouth off about that? Maybe he just assumed it was a regrettable accident.

Civilan Deaths: 443 to 19

"At least 443 people have been killed in Lebanon in the fighting, most of them civilians, according to a Health Ministry count Thursday based on bodies taken to hospitals, plus deaths Friday confirmed by security forces. But Lebanon's health minister estimated Thursday that as many as Lebanese 600 civilians have been killed, with other victims buried in rubble."

"On the Israeli side, 33 soldiers have died in fighting, and Hezbollah rocket attacks on northern Israel have killed 19 civilians, the Israeli army said.

The army said Friday that Israeli troops have killed about 200 Hezbollah guerrillas, but Hezbollah has reported only 35 casualties."

Who are the terrorists? If you define terrorists as those causing destruction to civilians. Remember Hezbollah kidnapped 2 soldiers killing 8 soldiers on Lebanese territory. Remember Israel has the finest military in the region and PRECISION guided ammunitions, but I guess no to so precises as to avoid the disproportionate civilian deaths...nah I think its delibrate, just like Kofi.

There shouldn't be any casualties in Israel or Lebanon during peace time. Since Hezbollah and Lebanon screwed that up, now counting collateral damage is a moot point.

Rather not moot altogether, but moot when talking about vilifying Israel for "disproportionate" repsonse.

The UN observers had to be unarmed as part of the terms of their being there. That's the only way both sides would accept them being there. Their job is to observe the rockets and so on outgoing and incoming, from their stations all over the area. The observation posts are well-known and well-marked. They complained many times, up through channels, with the Assistant Sec.-General also calling, that there had been bombs hitting very close. Then the precision rocket ended up right on top of them.

Why? Well, they're not the first to die, basically that way: it puts their eyes out. Dead men don't report.

Um, this article used to be called something like 'Hezbollah Rockets hit Farther into Israel than Ever Before' and said that the rockets landed harmlessly in fields near the town of Qlaia.

I guess this is another case of the AP making edits that completely change the story once it's been posted.

I'm thinking perhaps, since Newsvine doesn't control the AP, they could put some sort of a versioning system in place so if the AP makes a change it appears on the vine as a new story?

I'd rather see a notice on a story that it has been updated since it was first posted and we can view past versions by clicking here. If we create a new story each time it's updated, the conversations have to begin anew each time, which in civilized discourse just means the points that have been made must be made yet again, but in stories like this it would usually just mean a multiplication of the mudslinging. If the a new version came out which left a comment in conflict with the update, a quick check of the timestamps would show why their response was off.
