This is an interesting partnership. I had previously thought that eBay were anti Google, given that Google has recently released Gbuy and also has Google Talk which is a competetior to Skpe. It would be interesting to see the exact details behind this deal and just what it does mean for eBay.
Maybe eBay will become a Google company?

I find this very interesting due to eBay's ban of Google Checkout from the list of accepted payment methods.

In my experience in the Internet space it has always been common for Internet and technology companies that are competitors to do business with each other 'co-op-itition'. In this case they've got a good fit and the combination make for a formidable offering.
I personally think Google has no or little intention of any form of deeper relationship such as buy or merger. Rather this is probably a move to maximize potential and learn from each other. I feel Google is the winner here and has more to gain from this cooperation in the long run.
