This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Burns Boldly Demands Governor to Declare Fire State of Emergency, Governor Replies: you are late by over a month

Is senility setting in, Conrad?

He also seems to have a fascination with fire:

U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns urged Gov. Brian Schweitzer to declare a fire state of emergency Thursday and activate the Montana Army National Guard for firefighting - more than a month after Schweitzer had already done so.

In a brief letter faxed to the governor's office Thursday, Burns expressed his concern about the 156,000-acre Derby Mountain fire near Columbus.

"Entire ranches have been consumed and homes have been lost," Burns wrote. "Based on these conditions, I am requesting that you declare a state of emergency."

However, Schweitzer had declared such a state of emergency on July 11 - thus activating the Montana Army National Guard. He issued a second declaration on Aug. 11.

I love that he went after a Hotshot crew. Hotshots are crazy. They jump out of perfectly good aircraft into forest fires with a shovel and an axe.

They get paid jack-squat to do it too.

I know a few people that work in fire for USDA out of Virginia. That Staunton crew deserves a medal, not this crack-pot's scorn.

The Middle-Eastern Terrorist Union #406 issued a statement within hours that they are "shocked" and "deeply offended" by Burns' insensitive remarks. "Terrorists have strict regulation codes on personal hygiene," said Union Spokesman Ralph Greenburg, "and our strict policy of learning fluent spoken English is unmatched in the International Terrorism industry." Greenburg requested a written apology; Burns' office could not be reached for comment.

I know that "profiling" is a dirty word, but instead of worrying about offending people, wouldn't it truly serve the cause of justice more fully if we asked the deeper questions of why some stereotypes are true?

Just thinking out loud, here, but instead of getting our feelings hurt, for instance, over the fact that blacks are profiled for dealing drugs or gang violence (more so than whites), wouldn't it be more "just" to take a hard look at our educational, prison, and economic systems and try to fix the reasons why some black kids are driven to drug dealing and gangs? As late as the forties, our federal government kept black families out of white neighborhoods because they were worried that property values would be affected. To this day, houses in predominantly black neighborhoods (a problem created by our government) do not appreciate in value at anywhere near the rate as white neighborhoods, and the value of one's home is by far the greatest contributor to wealth in this country. While Jack and Jill up the hill cash out their home equity to send little Brianne and Mason to private schools, their black neighbors across town go to a school that has 15-year-old history books and no music classes.

Now it's true that everyone has to make their own choices, but in our society, some people start out with the deck stacked against them. So again, what would be more "just": apologizing for putting more cops on the street in black neighborhoods, or fixing our broken economic system? Instead of saying, "Sorry I profiled you," we should be asking, "How have I failed you?"

So instead of getting up in arms about Burns' comments, lets take as a given that most taxi drivers in the US (especially in large cities) are foreign-born. Then let's ask why people in the world (especially the Mid-East) want to kill Americans so badly. Isn't that the question we're trying so desparately to avoid? Aren't we hoping (on both sides of the debate) that we can sloganize our way out of the harsh fact that the East hates our hypocrisy, our promiscuity, our freedom, our God, our gods, our money, our attitude, our ideas, our sin... all our triumphs and dirty laundry we transmit over the airwaves, satellite signals, and a McDonalds near you?

We need to recognize that there are people who live among us who will kill us because they think it will make the world (or at least their part of it) a better place. Instead of tarring and feathering anyone who would dare make a non-PC statement, let's do the harder work of trying to fix the real problem.

And I don't know what the answer is. I love America with all its faults, much as I'd like to change them. But we can't invade a sovereign country and not be seen as imperialistic. We can't promote "freedom" by sexually objectifying women in advertising and not expect the family-oriented (if too patriarchal) Arab world to feel threatened. If I lived in Lebanon or Iraq, I'd be scared of America, too.

So how do we keep the world from hating us, without changing what's best about us?

Ehh, hand-wringing and accusations are cheaper and less painful than actual solutions. Sure, they accomplish nothing, but it's the thought that counts. The problems have been around for a very long time, and nobody wants to face them. That's why they don't get solved.

So how do we keep the world from hating us, without changing what's best about us?

If the world hates us for something, then odds are very good that it's not something that could be called "best" about us.

Another thing we could do is take what's best about us and not try to export it so forcefully. For instance, at present, democracy works questionably well for us now because our choice of candidates tends to be tweedle-dum and tweedle-@!$%#head. It's not currently what I'd label as one of our higher-quality exports.

Third, we might also do well to take a few steps back and take a long, careful look at our assets, i.e. what we can be proud of versus what we want to be proud of but really can't.

Ouch. Be careful. Whites are much more likely to use and to sell drugs than blacks are. That's why the profiling is an issue.

Hmm let me see..

He has drawn criticism in recent weeks for calling his house painter a "nice little Guatemalan man" during a June speech.
Burns, whose re-election campaign is pressing for tighter immigration controls, also suggested that the man might be an illegal immigrant. The campaign later said the worker is legal.
Burns, 71, also had to apologize after confronting members of a firefighting team at the Billings airport and telling them they had done a "piss-poor job," according to a state report, while the Hotshot crew had traveled 2,000 miles from Staunton, Va., to help dig fire lines for about a week around a 143-square-mile wildfire east of Billings.

and now...

says the United States is up against a faceless enemy of terrorists who "drive taxi cabs in the daytime and kill at night."

Is he committing a political suicide or is he really out of touch from the world? He probably needs to get out of his bubble. First of all, through my experience in the East, most cab drivers are from India and the Middle East and as far as I know, India have not produced any terrorist.. so far they have been attacked by terrorist. And not to mention in the West, there is a wide mix of races of cab drivers. So that comment was really unintelligent and unnecessary.

Wonder what Timothy McVeigh and his friend Terry Nichols did for living?

India does in fact have its own terrorism problem. We just haven't profiled them for it locally, lately... But for obvious reasons of course.

Anyway, heres the second link you get when googling for "indian terrorists"

This may be BS on my part... but weren't many airplane hijackings of the 70's related to Indian terrorism? I was born in 80, so I'm not really sure, but I vaguely remember hearing something mentioned about that when I was younger. Can someone correct me on this?

Indian terrorism is and was as big as KKK and white supremist groups in the US. It is more like a subtle civil war in their own country. It had nothing to do with international or other countries or even the US. Some gangs in LA are a lot more deadly than Indian "terrorist" in India.

Actually yes, there's a lot of non-white-jesus art -- it just doesn't come out of Europe. Interesting, most Christians tend to depict Christ, Mary, Joseph, etc as of their own race.

Look at Christian art in Asia -- Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are Asian.
Look at Christian art from North Africa -- Jesus, Mary, and Joseph are African.

Even cultural customs are projected into the art. Christian art from Imperial Russia frequently featured the Tsar's crown. From Africa it featured ceremonial head-dresses.
