Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

What a terrible loss! It's all the more tragic given that this was a freak strike. His enthusiasm was infectious; He will be missed.

If I may ask, how was he a "true inspiration?"

If I may ask, how was he a "true inspiration?"

Primarily with his infectious enthusiasm for wildlife, dedication to conservation and adventurous spirit. While there are many other quality television shows regarding animals and wildlife (all of which my son loves), it was the enthusiasm and spirit of Irwin that has captured his imagination and taken him on journeys throughout the world. This has inspired my son to become an avid bird watcher, zoo volunteer (at the age of 6!), and more.

Millions of us in the States are shocked and saddened with this news . Steve Irwin and his crews have inspired us to respect Life and Nature like no other in the past twenty years. I cry for his beloved Terri and Bindi and Bob. God bless his soul and the memory of his legacy in Australia. The miles that separate us cannot stop the love between good neighbors. Thank you for letting us share in the
life of a very good man. Continued prayers for his family and friends. With love, Adele USA

Wow. And it what a strange way. Those of us who watched his show saw him get up close and personal with massive crocodiles and extremely dangerous animals. At times, I was sure that was it for him. But this is such as - as the PM said - freak accident. It is so sad. To think that his kids will have to grow up without him in their lives - and that we've lost such a great conservationist. I met him when he came to Colorado to film - he was up at CSU - and he was as genuine and fun in real life as on camera. And so full of passion.

A piece of my heart just broke.

Didn't you guys see the "Grizzly Man" by Herzog? Crikey wasn't quite as nuts as Timmy, but they were in the same direction. He was teasing deadly animals in front of a camera to puff up his celebrity persona. Crikey also thought he was above it and could get away with it. See his quotes after the baby bait incident.

Herzog was not a trained environmentalist. He got too close to animals without any real knowledge of them. Irwin always said how dangerous animals were and that it was important to both understand and respect the animals one was working with. He often said how close he had come to injury - and death - but that it was important to expose the world to the plight of animals and how wonderful they are. Irwin was irresponsible at times - but he always owned up to it. Even after the incident with his son. He said it was a bad choice - but that there was no "real" danger. And since he wasn't killed by one of his own captive crocs - and none of his staff has been, either - it would appear that he was mostly correct.

Puff up his celebrity persona? Yes, that is so incredibly evident by the fact that he put all the money he made back into the zoo and animal conservation. Your statement is completely insulting to the memory of a man who devoted [and was willing to give up] his life for a cause he believed in with a passion and dedication like no other. I have never seen him be anything but humble. The only part of "celebrity" he was concerned with was the one that could help him get his cause across more effectively. He did what he did with the animals in order to demonstrate their behavior to the general public, and educate us so that we could carry on his legacy of saving endangered species and reverse our destructive ways towards the environment.

My sympathy goes out to his family, friends & all who were fortunate enough to know such an out-standing person. He just had so much passion & respect for all animals that it's just not fair! Rest in peace, Steve
