      You know the root of this problem with Islamic violence is the fact that Islam does not have a religious leader. Let's take for granted that the majority of Muslims don't condone violent reprisals for controversies such as the Pope's statement. There are thousands of Muslim Clerics out there who will react as they see fit. They do not want to be seen as weak, so they will generally condemn things like this rather than express forgiveness. Extreme Clerics will go so far as to call for blood, and I would imagine few would ask Muslims to turn the other cheek.

      The fundamentalists are result of an world dominated by a logic of the unique thought. When the reason are dominant and the most innate impulses are depreciated or underestimated, the violence emerges with all power. When the Pope, or any religious leader, use their authority to say rationally something that is related with others faiths, need to be sensible and respectfull.
      The absense of this implies the growth of violence. I'm so sad for this terrible consequences!
