WHoa! I just watched this on CNN, crazy.
Go citizen media go!
Newsvine Staff: There is a wonderful mashup opportunity here.... give an easy way to link and post Flickr pics in your articles / comments....
if this is the october surprise, this is the last you'll see of me.
What does that mean?
phew.
on 10-11
"Fighter aircraft are being put in the air over several U.S. cities as a precautionary measure, NORAD tells CNN."
FAA confirms a fixed wing aircraft struck the building.
This other Newsvine article says, quote:
Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was indication of terrorism in the crash, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." (emphasis added)
Was that a typo? I'm guessing so because why would they send agents "as a routine" if there really were indications of terrorism?
Forgot the link. My bad.
Christine Monaco, a New York spokeswoman for FBI, said there was no indication of terrorism in the crash, but that officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine." FAA spokesman Jim Peters said all three New York City-area airports are operating normally.
Looks like they changed it.
Yeah, I just noticed that. That was quite a typo! :-)
Watching it live on Fox News, but nobody seems to have contacted the air traffic controllers in the area, who should know what planes were in the area, which one is missing, who was piloting it, and any passengers.
I saw somewhere, on one of the news sites that the plane was operating on VFR and didn't need to be controlled by air traffic control...
Though, after 9/11 I find it hard to believe that they don't monitor and track every single plane anywhere near Manhattan...
I just heard that small planes in the area are NOT closely tracked. The lower East river area is considered a free flight area, and small planes are allowed to just "fly around" there.
I guess terrorism is "no credible threat", in that regard.
I would assume that there are tour operators and advertisers that fly small planes all over NYC - I can see them wanting to protect their livelyhood after 9/11.
Hey - any of you in the area - are any surrounding buildings damaged? And what's the air like?
My sister and her family live at 5th and 72nd - but across the street from this. I'm a little (lot) freaked - so if anyone can give me some news as to the condition of the area - it will help.
From the WMC home page:
A small amount of debris from the ensuing explosion hit the top of the Imaging Center; at this time, we do not think any debris hit the S Building. A small amount of smoke from the fire was drawn into both buildings. Both buildings were evacuated immediately and the air intake for both buildings has been shut down.
Thanks so much.
My sister has a week-old baby (my niece) - so I'm a bit worried about her.
Oct 11 2006, Fox News, at 6:30PM EST reports that George Steinbrenner, owner of the NY Yankees, just confirmed that Cory Lidle was indeed the pilot that flew the plane that crashed into the New York apartment building, killing himself and one other, a female.
