NKorea Edges Toward Reactor Shutdown

DISARMAMENT DEAL: North Korea is poised to turn off its only operating nuclear reactor, the key of its atomic weapons program, as part of agreement to disarm in return for aid.

WHAT'S NEXT: South Korean tanker is due to deliver shipment of donated oil to the North on Saturday as an initial reward for reactor shutdown. U.N. monitoring team also arrives Saturday.

WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN: The North has not given precise timetable for starting the shutdown, but hinted it do so once the first oil shipment arrived.

Well, at least this time he's agreeing to let the UN weigh in rather than just rushing in ourselves.

He was going to let the U.N. weigh in last time until it became very obvious that the rest of the world didn't believe the U.S. and the U.K. and then decided to not bring it up to the security council and go it alone.

Besides, N.K. isn't the target he's making a case for right now anyway...

President Bush did not reject the idea of talks with North Korea. He has stated that six party talks with countries surrounding North Korea, and most affected, as well as the USA, could be involved in talks. He even stated that opportunities for bilateral talks are possible within the six-party talks. He is advocating diplomacy, not war. I would assume that diplomacy requires talking.

But he added: "I believe the commander in chief must try all diplomatic measures before we commit our military."

So, TRY THEM. There is nothing to be lost by pursuing bilateral talks. Nothing. Just because we have talks with them, doesn't mean that we have to GIVE them anything.

"One has a stronger hand when there's more people playing your same cards," he said in an hourlong news conference that was dominated by the North Korean crisis.

Besides the fact that this metaphor doesn't even make sense - its wrong. When playing Poker you WANT there to be less people at the showdown, because it means your cards have a better chance of winning. If everyone is involved, all of the time, then diplomacy is even harder to attain because you have to spend 3/4 of your time just trying to get everyone on the same page.

This man and his stubborness are going to get us all killed. Minute by minute his refusal to change his mind is making the world a more dangerous place.

I don't think anyone expects Dubya to make sense anymore. So it's ok.

He didn't believe this with Iraq or Afghanistan. He pretty much set ultimatums he knew wouldn't be met, and invaded.

I have no faith in his ability for diplomacy, and I don't really see how anyone could argue that he has strengthened a single relationship during his presidency.

One thing I have learned about human behavior is that when there is something we don't like to do, or are not very good at, we will find any excuse not to do it. Although facing it head on and repeating would eventually make us experts...we still tend to avoid the situation at all costs.......

GW is not good at diplomacy and therefore he avoids it like the plague.... too bad for the rest of the US and the world that we have a man who can't face his fears or get past his short comings....

two more years two more years two more years
