GAUNTLET THROWN: President Bush called for the top 15 greenhouse gas producing nations, including the U.S., to set a goal for reducing the pollution by the end of 2008.
HOT TOPIC: The announcement could deflect criticism during next week's summit of leading industrialized nations, where global warming is sure to be discussed.
CLEARING THE AIR: The countries would begin talks this fall, but each would be able to develop its own strategy.
I'm sure glad we're spending money on things like this...
Well. I live in the Southwest and I'M sure glad we are (even if it is a last minute election stunt brought on by embarassment from the Minute Men actions).
Bush: "We is a gonna keep out dem dur brown people with this here fence. This should energize my base -- brown-people hatin' cowboys. Yee haw!"
Yay for taking away the right of people to cross a small line drawn by politicians Gadsden and the negotiators of the Mexican-America war!
I wonder if many Americans know or care that next fence goes up at the Canadian border... that's felt up here to be pretty unfriendly.
And the next fence after that will be along the coastlines...you know, those Cubans love to row to Florida. And then we'll just build a fourth fence across the sky so no one can hop over! Then no one will ever get into America illegally!
Let's get real here people. The fence really IS a good idea. Listen, there are many, many things Bush has done in the name of stupidity only to try and redo them and save some face. But this time, it's for the better. Immigrants of any culture can still enter the US, but it will become a little more difficult for them to do it illegally. And I'm not just talking about Mexicans that cross the southern borders. Believe me, I'm not ignorant citizen who screams "Illegals are taking our jobs!" But I know a problem when I see one, and illegal immigration was one of them. NO rights are being broken here. Personally, I would love to see a day when anyone can go to any country, and not have so many rules, and regulations to dog them down. However, that is not possible right now, and we need some sort of measure to lead things into the right direction.
Am I being insensitive towards Mexicans or any other minority group? No! I'm just an American citizen who would love for others to be an American citizen, but legally. Really, is it that much to ask? And instead of always pointing the finger at Mexicans or other illegal aliens, lets start pointing the finger at the businesses and companies who accommodate such a thing, and do nothing to legalize them when they get here.
There, I'm done preaching. I'm sure someone disagrees, and that's cool. That's America.
The Great Wall of Mexico....
Cause walls have worked so well in other places, China (the big one you can see from space), Berlin, Israel.
I'm all for border control, but a wall? C'mon.
To all you, "I'm pro border security but a wall?" folks... Let me ask you this. How else do you block passage from one geographical location to another?
I mean, don't me wrong, a human chain of border patrol agents might work, or even land mines, but what is more practical than a wall to divide these countries?
Instead of bashing the border fence, come up with something more efficient and logical. Then maybe, just maybe, you will be listened too.
By the way, the humanitarian argument is moot and idiotic.
And don't get me wrong, penalties to employers hiring illegals would be another part of the solution we all need to look at, but for now it seems, big business is buying it's way out of that option. This will change soon.
I don't know if a fence is the answer in this situation because I have a feeling that we'll have some creative scaling going on at the border.
