Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Hmm. I never even thought of the possibility that people would adopt black cats at Halloween time just for Halloween use. The fear of "satanic ritual" is kind of amusing, but I expect that more people might like to have a black cat at Halloween time, and then just put the poor thing out on the street.

a good adoption process would tend to weed that out

This is so right. While any animal shelter or adoption agency can "be had" by a slick con artist, good reference checks, reasonably rigid requirements, etc. can go a long way toward weeding out the bad adopters. It doesn't always work, but can help keep pets out of the hands of weirdos.
... Now, where did I put my black hood, pentagram, and that cute fluffy bunny?

Black cats tend to be adopted less often than other felines

Why? My first cat was black, and it is clearly a fantastic colour for a cat to be.

We had a black cat once... named Sassy--acted that way, as a matter of fact. She was essentially a cranky old lady turned into a poofy little cat. Awesome cat.

I have owned two black cats - Witch & Jazz.  They were both wonderful pets.  But now they are in the Big Mouse Barn in the sky.
