Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Why would he resign then? If this is baseless then I'm sure he would stand on very good ground with his sheep despite the "accusations".

The church by-laws require the pastor to temporarily step down until accusations of immorality can be proven wrong. I guess we'll find out what the investigation finds.

Of course he would temporarily step down during something huge like this. There is no way a congregation of people are going to listen to a pastor preach when there are looming allegations like this.

Assuming things doesn't get anybody anywhere. Think before you speak.

se7en,

Thanks so much for pointing out the Bush connection. This excerpt from a recent article in Harper's magazine entitled "Inside America's most powerful megachurch with Pastor Ted Haggard"

Pastor Ted, who talks to President George W. Bush or his advisers every Monday...

So we're not talking about just any evangelical. We're talking about one of THE most tightly Fascist-connected evangelicals in the nation

Well saying an action in general is wrong isn't judging, per se, so I wouldn't rush to say that that verse is applicable in terms of him denouncing homosexuality. Of course, denouncing homosexuals might be a bit more of a sticky area--in any case, let's not fudge to say holding moral beliefs is judging...

OK. Let's give him a fair trial, then hang him.

So homosexuality is a capital offense? ¡Doble estándard!

He did more than "hold a moral belief." He has directed his followers to oppose equal rights for homosexuals and has tried to "cure" them of their "sin." He has most certainly judged them.

Not to mention the whole section in Matthew about praying in public. Jesus wasn't much into public displays of superior piety. He left that to the Pharisees.

Wait, wait, wait--whether you agree or not, he believes that the Bible says that homosexuality is wrong, along with a host of other things, and saying that those actions are wrong and should not be encouraged is not "judging"... It's quite clear that the Christians are to "expel the immoral brother" from among them, which sounds like "judging" by your standard, but not so by the Biblical one.

Saying that homosexuals are less worthy of respect and less valuable as human beings, etc. is certainly judging and unbiblical--saying that the act of practicing homosexual intercourse is wrong and should be discouraged is stating a belief...

@Dennis
Yeah, I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek as well, knowing that you weren't saying what I characterized you as saying.

The hatred that drips from their mouths as they deliver their spittle-laced invective against gays makes it quite clear that they have judged them. Not allowing a non-celibate homosexual to worship in the church is on the line, but directing that they should receive inferior partnership benefits and that people should be allowed to discriminate against them because of their orientation is a whole 'nother ball of wax.

That is -not- evidence of the exploit that Krebs and Maynor were all gung-ho about a few months ago. That is evidence of an exploit against a wireless card that hasn't been in use for over 3 years.

These types of folks are nothing new. Jesus called these folks "Pharisees."

We should pity this guy. Hold him accountable for so grossly violating his own standards that he uses to condemn, yes, but pity him. He only acts this way because of the pain of not being able to be honest about himself.

I suspect the same of Rumsfeld and Rove and maybe Cheney as well.

The resignation, while far from definitive, indicates a strong possibility of validity. I suspect the speed of it is a move to bring this scandal out of the limelight as quickly as possible.

If anybody can remember in 10 years, it will be interesting to see what this guy's life is like. If you can't wait, check on the Iran-Contra scandalees...

Okay--I found this blog a few weeks ago, and found it fascinating reading. Not because I felt happy that this particular church seemed to be imploding at the speed of light, but because it made me sad to think that a group of people who would want to come together for a really sacred purpuse could come to such a place. In addition, it seemss odd that so much of their internal strife would be public for anyone to see. On initial reading, I kept thinking that they must not have realized that the world could read these posts.

Start pretty far back for the history, if you're interested. It's truly a sad place to be.

Upon reading the article here at Newsvine, however, it looks like the name of the same church--but none of the players seem to be the same. Is it the same? Does anyone know?

head of his 14,000-member New Life Church

Most members of my extended family are strong, practicing Baptists. Since I am not, over the years I have had many entertaining conversations with them. Since we were family, I could say outrageous things and not get flamed by them.

But on one point we found ourselves in agreement: The super, mega-churches cannot be effective in providing a "church home" to their parishioners. How can the leader of a 14,000 member church give time to their members in times of need? My brother-in-law at one time was a Baptist minister of a church with 100 to 150 members. He was in constant consultation with his church members with grief and marriage counseling and the other hundred things that will cause a church member to want time with their pastor.

The church in Colorado Springs probably has dozens of "associate ministers" to handle the work load. But what happens when a member wants to spend 15-minutes with their minister, not an associate of the minister?

I guess we should wait for the evidence to be made available before we can tell if there are any flames beneath the smoke. But it does seem odd that the mere accusation of a non-member could cause him to step down...

It looks more like a mega-Entertainment Complex / God Mall. You can see it + an interview with Haggard himself >> Part 1 - Richard Dawkins documentary "The Root of All Evil"

          That's good stuff.

I've been to churches like this and I highly recommend the experience to any student of humanity. But...don't go alone.

I have this to say about them...where is Jesus when you need him?

(Mark 11:17 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of robbers')

This gay lover is in a very high stakes game. There are at least two levels of plausable deniability at play.
The publicity at present is a bishop. Haggard has just castled. There are still both Queens on the board (s@!$%#)
IF the tapes get loose the lover has lost his queen and all major pieces. His defense is shattered.
He is quite simply, dead. (with plausable deniability and sending a serious message)
If he has the recordings on a well hidden server (overseas with a timed release if the lock is not regularily triggered) he has a chance, a very slim chance.
IMHO you do not mess with these people unless you have either a death wish or a mindbendingly cunning core of hardened sneaky@!$%#ers
Speaking of mindbendingly cunning sneaky@!$%#ers, bear in mind that this could be a setup aimed at smearing the 'left wing media' triumphantly peaking shortly after it begins.
Either way it's very rich, very saucy and ultimately very distracting.

i guess we'll have to see if faux news pics up the story.. if so, it's probably not the "mess with the librul media" angle.

i for one hope like hell it is all true.

Yes, here's the details. I once blew a date by castling. Didn't realize going into the game that I totally outclassed the man in question. About a third of the way through the game, after I had already castled, I realized I was going to slaughter him, seldom conducive to fun later in my experience, so I eased waaaay back. He got all pissy because I was "letting him win". I denied it, but he said that all he needed to know that I was a better player was that I castled. He had never even heard of it. DOH! He would never play chess with me again, either.

You only work on Sundays, and even then it's a bit sketchy as to what your work is. You get to scream for hours and yell at people, who you subsequently rob and fondle. You also have closeted buttsecks.

Being a prostitute for a priest is way better. You can confess immediately afterwards, reducing to a minimum the likelihood you die with the unconfessed mortal sin of father @!$%#ing.

yeah i think i'd rather be a prostitute than an evangelical leader. there were prostitutes in the bible, after all, with whom Christ made friends, not to mention the prostitutes who contributed to the lineage of abraham's descendents. there were no evangelical leaders in the bible.

and as a prostitute, i'd have the good feelings that went along with providing a meaningful service in trade. evangelical leaders are simply criminals - they engage in simple theft. what they pretend to give to their sheep in return is, in no uncertain terms, much less enjoyable than sex.

Oh the hypocrisy! In my experience it is often the people with something to hide, the ones struggling with their own fears and misunderstandings that lash out against that which they themselves secretly suspect themselves to be, or do not understand - meaning I have met a few people that self-identify themselves as "republicans" or "social conservatives" who have triggered the Gaydar off the scale...

Haggard was always one of these individuals, the way he would speak in his many interviews with his total devotion to an ideology of hatred and division masked as a religion of love and acceptance. His political actions were anything but, and now it may be that his private life has been exposed to be a sad facade. He should have just come out a long time ago and spared everyone...

            ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HYSTERICAL. This guy is as gay as a 3 dollar bill. Anyone who didn't see that is BLIND but of course, people see what they want to see. Personally, this is a GREAT day as far as I'm concerned as I have resented his political influence, nevermind his self-righteous attitude, for years.

I have the utmost respect for ministers, priests and others who are true to the calling. But these Haggard types who say one thing as a representative of God then are off doing GOd knows what with God knows who the next minute as their followers go home feeling bad about something they may have done while he's living it up probably playing hee hawwwwwww in a seedy motel room as "ART" with some gay escort he probably found at gaydar???? Uhm, no. LOL!

Another one takes the road of Humpty Dumpty and good. Yes I am taking pleasure in his destruction because he took pleasure and shaping poitical policy and passing judgements on others for years.

            Screw him...and I don't mean that literally.

Rasputin was born in the Tyumen district of Siberia, far away from the glittering salons in the Imperial Capital of St. Petersburg. Even today he is a shadowy and mysterious character; a person of contradictory personality traits. Was he a miracle worker or just a crafty manipulator of the Imperial Family?

The body of Rasputin — poisoned, shot four times, and badly beaten — was recovered from the river and autopsied. The cause of death was drowning. His arms were apparently found in an upright position, as if he had tried to claw his way out from under the ice. In the autopsy, it was found that he was poisoned, and that the poison alone should have killed him.
