In July, Cook performed a guest spot at the Rhode Island comedy club Yuk Yuk's, where he was to perform a 20 to 30 minute set before headliner Peter Kelamis. Cook continued past his allotted time despite repeated signals to finish the act and eventually had to be cut off.
I don't believe there is even a "Yuk Yuk's" comedy club in Rhode Island. Whenever he performs here, it's at the Ryan Center at the University of Rhode Island, or the Newport Comedy Festival. That's where his fanbase is, after all.
In any case, his audience gets him, and they're likely much younger and a little more appreciative of the deadpan post-pubescent humor than the author. It's his motion, energy and stage presence that sets him apart, much like a younger George Carlin. The delivery's likely the better draw than that 5000th rehashing of a random sexual encounter.
But is he [Dane Cook] funny?
I don't think so.
He never made me laugh.
Question: Who would win in a no-holds-barred deathmatch between Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia?
Answer: The public, regardless.
Let's just say, he's no Lewis Black. I had enjoyed some of his stand-up when I was in college - but it got tired after a while. That "Tourgasm" show was what really killed it for me. Perhaps the worst show to ever be on HBO.
He's no Lewis Black? Ok, Dane Cook may not have the upper hand on political humour, but he does know how to tell a joke. His jokes are more like stories, carefully weaved tales of fancy. Much like Seinfelds classic jokes about "nothing", Dane Cook points out those little everyday idiocincracies that we fail to notice. From the fact that we all do turn into critics when we watch the previews at the movie theatre to the many "what if's" we may think when we cut someone in line, Dane cooks brilliant story-telling and vast imagination make him one of the greatest comedians of all time. I laughed and said "thats so true" enough the first time I saw Dane Cook for all the dane-haters out there. Danes fans are loyal ( my roomates and I are constantly playing him in our place)and will always greet him with a SU-FI! So watch as Dane takes over the (comedy) world!
There are also loyal fans of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour - but I wouldn't consider that comedy either. It really depends on the audience at which the comedian is aiming.
