Gay Penguin Book Shakes Up Ill. School

Jim Suhr, Associated Press

A copy of the book "And Tango Makes Three" is seen on display in a bookstore Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006 in Chicago. The illustrated children's book based on a true story of two male penguins in New York City's Central Park Zoo who adopted a fertilized egg and raised the chick as their own is getting a chilly reception among some parents in Shiloh, Ill., who worry about the book's availability to elementary students and the reluctance of administrators to restrict access to it. Oh, good. Imbue penguins with anthropomorphic qualities, then lynch 'em.

Book would simply teach kids something they should be aware of about life, nature of the world they live in and tolerance! Silly parents...

Tyson, you clearly forgot one thing, the book would also teach kids about closed minded parents who insist their kids understand religion (which I might add is possibly entirely made up) at the age of 3, but teaching them about REALITY (the fact that there ARE gay people and animals for that matter) they shun away from.

They're right to ban this. Last time I read about the three little pigs, I was having ass orgies with farm girls for a week. And I was only 9.

What version of the book did you have? And what elementary school would stock it?

This book, on the other hand, has elementary school students as their target audience. Banning it from them would defeat the purpose.

This is ridiculous. They talk about how the "sexuality" of the book is inappropriate for children as if it's full of gay pride parades and sex.

Should we ban Goldilocks because it involves a heterosexual bear couple?

Stupid gay penguins are ruining our glorious capitalist
christian nation!!!
Stupid gaybob homos....

(christ.....why do people even *care* anymore about sexual
orientation.......Haven't we evolved past this now?
That's so Hitler-ish...)

If gay parents are so awful and turn out horrible children then just
look at the record of "straight" couples turning out children....
Probably about the same, I'd guess.

I really wish people would just get over themselves....

So no, ban the book! Little does Ansab know I was one of those girls.

Instead of putting gays back in the closet I'd like to thank these people for doing more to help gays and lesbians get their God given rights since Anita Byrant. Somebody please hand them some matches so we can get some footage of them burning this soon to be a best seller.

Like they say in the article, banning this book would be ridiculous. Honestly I think the one librarian was smart to move it to the non-fiction section. It was a smart and simple solution to a problem. If its based on actual events this avoids censorship and keeps the book available to children that want to learn something about real life occurrences.

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was based on actual events - but I think you will have a hard time finding the story in the non-fiction section of the library. The fact that anyone would want this book banned is an atrocity. It would be as if someone wanted to ban "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" from TV because it has black people in it, and they don't want their children exposed to that kind of thing.

Ya but the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based off of many different criminals... and overall this subject is inappropriate for children. The part of the library im sure she transfered the PENGUIN book is in the children's non-fiction section. There is a slight difference between penguins and mass murderers, thus making the mention of Texas chainsaw massacre irrelevant.

What does the fact that it is about mass murderers have to do with the fact that it is "based on true events" - but in fact, it is fiction. There are a number of books that are based on true events - but are in fact, fiction. If violence is the issue - why allow the Grimm Fairytales be available to children?

The fact remains - I expect to find true stories in the "Non-Fiction" section. I do not expect to find all of the books that some parents don't want their kids to see.

Did you miss the fact that this children's book was about two actual penguins at a zoo that adopted a baby penguin. Its not just based on a true story, it literally is a true story.

If that's the case, fine - but if there is an ounce of "artistic liberty" taken, such as the penguins talking or having feelings about one another, it is fiction. I would have to see the book to know.

I am guessing - but I believe it is non-fiction in the way that Saving Private Ryan is non-fiction. While it is a true story, it never actually happened they way it is portrayed.

All right... but what is the opinion of the penguin society around the world? We can find penguins already in every corners of our planet, thanks to the zoos, I think they must to define their position concerning this CASE. Are they really similars to the HUMAN BEING? Because the fact that two male penguins adopte (?) a little one, could have a totally different meaning in a totally different culture, isn't it? Maybe we can not have any idea what could it mean, because of our narrow mind. World is full of unexplained misteries, yeah.

coincidentally, I watched the BBC "Planet Earth" episode 6 Ice Worlds a few days back on Emperor Penguins.

It was fascinating. The role the male penguin plays in nurturing the young is also truly phenomenal.

      Basically,

      1. Just before winter: All the penguins march about 100 miles inland to a breeding ground and mate.

      2. The female hatches an egg and passes it carefully to the male who covers it with a sort of pouch thingy.

      3. The females march back to sea.

      4. For weeks on end the males huddle together, through the freezing winter stroms, without food, trying to keep the egg warm. This was amazing to watch. As they all made everchanging huge huddles during terrible antarctic storms

      5. The sun returns and the eggs hatch

      6. The females return and regurgitate up some food for the baby. And takes the baby back from the exact same male she mated with. Some males are fairly reluctant to give up their baby.

Anyway, it is certainly no myth that male emperor Penguins make great parents.

The Planet Earth series is great viewing.

Let us remind ourselves that the book is about animals which are inferior to human and that it is our responsibility as Human Beings to educate our children on the facts of life. Even if the Book is ban what is to stop our children from learning about Homosexuality. This is why it is important for parents to talk to there Children and their Educators about these matters.

Answer me this when was the last time you saw a male dog trying to hump a female dog.

Every one laughs it off when the see two male dogs trying to do each other, or for that matter humping anything, but when its based on a true story of two male penguins in New York City's Central Park Zoo that adopted a fertilized egg and raised the chick as their own it turns serious. Why not tell the children the two male penguins are uncles or bothers raising their dead relatives child.

Why not tell the children the two male penguins are uncles or bothers raising their dead relatives child.

...because unless the penguins are uncles, then that would constitute lying to children. Do you find this to be an acceptable solution? If so, why? What is so scary about telling the kid that two male penguins raised an egg together without having to recontextualize it? You'd rather lie to your kid than just tell them that?
