Attacks on Baghdad Green Zone

WHAT'S THE GREEN ZONE? Also called the International Zone, it's the heavily protected area in central Baghdad that holds the U.S. and British embassies, the Iraqi parliament and prime minister's office.

OPEN TO ATTACK: A U.N. report in June said insurgents had bombarded the area with rockets and mortar fire more than 80 times since March.

CASUALTIES: Nearly 30 people have been reportedly killed in the barrages.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Does anyone see the irony in the photo of "specialized and award-winning talents of the entire KBR food-service staff" preparing a Thanksgiving meal for US troops accompanying an article about brutal violence in Iraq? Or is it just me? I suppose photos of bloody body parts would be too upsetting?

Yes I thought it was quite bizarre. The second picture is more appropriate - but quite graphic..

Seriously, violence in Iraq? Really? Pfft.

I clicked through because I thought the image was truely bizarre for the story and it must be a mistake.

Like the other day when there was a pic of Ahmadinejad flashing pearl from ear to ear on the font page accompanied by a story of a famous Iraqi Comedian being killed? In that context he looked very Yakov Smirnoff. Surreal.

Back to the story though, that is a lot of people when you calculate both Iraqi civilians and US troop casualties. Staggering. Politics aside, when do you know who wins? And if so many of both sides are dead, is it still winning?

Arguing about the war at this point is futile. But there does seem to be a real need for reevaluation of strategies at some point.

Doh. I didn't even notice the arrow for another picture.

Who wins? It's whoever proclaims victory loudly enough, and whoever claims it in their own country's history books.

Uhhh do they mean post-Saddam? Perhaps the AP should investigate something called Anfal.

Thanks, Aine. You just gave me my best laugh of the day.

It's a PILGRIM! Duh! Obviously, they know what they're doing! These are the "specialized and award-winning talents of the entire KBR food-service staff!"
