Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Always check on this. Companies like Best Buy have this happen a lot it seems.

Agreed. This happens all the time at the 'big box' stores that often have fairly relaxed return policies (and occasionally a dubious employment strategy around the holidays). The boxes are rarely checked when items are returned. I've been fortunate that the only time it happened to me was with a toaster, and I was able to get it corrected without too much effort. I hear and read about people buying expensive electronics only to get pieces of wood or cheaper items in their place once the box is opened. It's a good idea to have the sales associate or even just yourself open the box before leaving the store to save even a little hassle (and potentially a lot).

Yes, apparently there is no warranty that the expensive computer box you just bought actually contains a computer, and the assumption by the store is that you're lying to them. Which is silly. It would be much easier to repackage the sauce, return it, and walk out with a new item, screwing the next person who gets that box.

It's in the best interest of Best Buy, Sony, and any other company involved to simply give the customer the benefit of the doubt. If the store doesn't honor the purchase/exchange, then bad publicity will start wafting around and Best Buy will get yet another smirch on their name. If they honor the purchase/exchange, then the good publicity will really help them with sales later.

I'm familiar with the store in Ellisville, I live about 10 miles away in Manchester. I have used the store before.

I can certainly see their concern that they are getting scammed, and they would be right, they were scammed, but not by the people in this article. Probably someone who returned the camera prior to this couple.

They'll get their camcorder, I'm sure. This stuff does happen and the store is being cautious simply (in my opinion) because of policy. Still though, when its all said and done, it'll be a great story. Who else can claim they have bought a $1600 jar of sauce?

Yea, I don't think I want to be the one to make that claim. :)
