Ugh... now we'll have to hear all the tabloid news about...
Beckham & Lohan
Beckham & Hilton
Beckham & Richie
Beckham & Spears
.....
And yes, I am full well aware that he's married.
And now I've realized that we'll definitely hear more about Victoria's partying with the 4 names noted above than we will about David's infidelity.
Come on, he can do better than Richie.
Beckham & Barrymore?
In any case, Footballers' Wives should have a heyday reenacting everything that will transpire.
Man, he sure has a niice trophey wife!!
Yep, and now that they added a photo, this is now tagged hot-chicks.
this is great news for MLS... i bet LA Galaxy attendance will go way up this season.
and it's about time we had a super-high profile European player come play in the US .. it's a symbolic victory if nothing else.
Except he is a super-high profile washed-up European players. It's like when Sammy Sosa is going to end up in the Japanese league, except the Japanese league is far closer to MLB talent levels than MLS is to European.
Now all I need is Ronaldinho to move to the closest MLS city (I'm in London, Ontario)...
That would be Toronto FC...yeah?
Suppose so.
My lack of knowledge tells me two things, 1) the league is under-advertised as I would consider going to a match if I knew about this (2+ hour drive), and 2) I need to get my ass in gear and show some interest in these things.
It'd be cool to see LA play in Toronto.
Wow, thank you kindly for the link Tom. I had no idea the Under-20 World Cup was being held there and just later on this year. That's definitely something I will have to see in person.
Also, the team sounds exciting, it seems to me that they're doing it the "right" way, building what appears to be a quality organization.
Thanks again, exciting times are ahead.
Yeah I spent a few minutes reading up on the organization after I realized it existed...
Shame on me.
Beckham: Show Me Da Money!!!
I hope many other soccer stars follow so that we can actually have soccer worth watching in this country.
Don't hold your breath till it happens amigo.
Beckham's move was to Hollywood. He stopped being a sports star when he got kicked out of Man United. Even Real Madrid bought im to sell shirts to 14 year old girls in the Far East.
Even his wife's singing career will start again. Watch in the news for endless media obesssion.
What will they call them?
Speckham? PoshBecks? Pecks? or Just Posh & Becks.
Maybe we can become the land of soccer superstars who are in the twilight of their careers. I'll take a grumpy old Zidane and an overweight Ronaldo any day of the week!
Amen then.
He stopped being a sports star when he got kicked out of Man United.
Jeez, Mr. Bassir. Was that the taste of sour grapes?
Yes I never liked him. First because he was a MAn U player. Later because the hype about him was manufactured to sell shirts. I thought that was annoying. I see him as the Britnney Spears of football.
Really, Sir Alex kicked him out because the show biz was intruding on his game. He was proved right since his career went down from there.
Sir Alex kicked him out
I never followed Man Utd. But I thought the two had some kind of father-son complex thing going and that Alex was furious about Beckham leaving!?
No hombre, Beckham left because he fell out with Sir Alex, an easy thing to do I admit. There was the incident when Sir Alex flung a boot at Beckham that tore Beck's eye. Sir Alex told him to cut out all the show biz and Beckham wouldn't.
Didn't Fergie kick the boot at him? They said it was an accident and Beckham forgave him but ...
Didn't Fergie kick the boot at him? They said it was an accident and Beckham forgave him but ...
That's allegedly what happened, but to be honest I doubt we'll ever find out what really happened.
You're right there Mike.
The only Scottish football match I ever saw was Aberdeen's last game of the season when Ferguson won his first managerial honour. If I remember right it was a 'one each' (that's what they say north of the border) draw against Partick Thistle. After the game I got to walk through some of the nicer bits of Glasgow on the way back to the local station.
He may well be past his prime but that free kick (correct term?) goal in the World Cup was mindblowing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is nothing more than a way for MLS to generate advertising dollars. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. What this move does not do, despite the assertions of Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl, is create legitimacy for MLS on the world stage. He called this day a "Red-letter day" for MLS, I call it a scarlet letter day.
While this move by MLS will no doubt bring more American fans to the game, MLS will remain a minor league to the worlds best leagues in Europe. Beckham has, in reality, been relegated to the minors. If MLS were on the verge of world legitimacy, why then are it's players so quick to abandon ship and play in Europe. USA star Clint Dempsey in essence forced MLS to grant his transfer to Fulham F.C. by saying he would refuse to sign with the league after the end of the 2007 season. So MLS brokered the most lucrative transfer deal in league history to send it's best young American star to England.
Now Dempsey joins Onyewu, McBride, Bocanegra as up and coming, high profile, American soccer stars who have hoped the Atlantic to play in Europe. The MLS will not gain legitimacy until it can cultivate, keep and attract the worlds best. It will not gain elite status by cultivating and letting go it's best players and accepting players who have passed their prime, like Beckham, and Ronoldo who is rumored to being targeted by the New York Red Bulls.
It certainly won't become world class by giving $250 Million to a has been star.
I do agree with this post. There's no doubt Beckham will raise the game over there. Perhaps not by much to the American people, but to those who follow him (media wise) MLS will receive that money back from international TV rights alone. Beckham was a cash cow for Real Madrid, and despite what everyone says is still a great player who will raise the quality of the game tenfold. However, this won't keep the game up for long. Once the hype has died down it'll be back to normal for MLS.
What I see this as, is the first step in a long line of moves for MLS. The league is now more attractive as there is a world-class player playing in it now, so why not try to draw some more players? Better yet, why not do some scouting and draw their own talent from Europe's best? BETTER YET, why not use David Beckham to train a new, youthful squad? Working alongside such experience could only make the players better.
So yeah, there are a lot of benefits to Beckham being there. With him as a captain I can't see L.A. Galaxy doing too badly.
This is excellent news.
You're just happy he did not return to Manchester United.
Oh shut up you.
Beckham is a HOTTIE!
