Attacks on Baghdad Green Zone

WHAT'S THE GREEN ZONE? Also called the International Zone, it's the heavily protected area in central Baghdad that holds the U.S. and British embassies, the Iraqi parliament and prime minister's office.

OPEN TO ATTACK: A U.N. report in June said insurgents had bombarded the area with rockets and mortar fire more than 80 times since March.

CASUALTIES: Nearly 30 people have been reportedly killed in the barrages.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"small group of active-duty military troops planned to attend the protest. A Defense Department spokeswoman said members of the Armed Forces can speak out, subject to several restrictions. They must not do so in uniform, and they must make clear that they do not speak on behalf of their military unit, their service or the Defense Department, unless authorized to do so."

Nothing like taking the freedoms of speach away from the military...ok they didnt take them away, just made it insanely hard for them to exercise their rights.. That last part.. how do you in a protest make it clear that you dod not speak for your unit or the military? I can see it if you are giving a speach but what about just participating... do you have to like muslim appologies and announce a disclaimer everytime you open your mouth?

Nothing in that statement implied a military member couldn't "participate" no matter how you may wish it were so.

How do you make it clear that you do not speak for your unit or the military you ask. Pretty simple, you follow the rules laid out. Wear civilian clothes, and don't identify yourself as a member of the military or an individual unit or ship.

That's hard? That's to difficult?

I realize this group of protesters would dearly love to be able to point out a group among them all wearing a U.S. Military uniform to utilze but it just won't happen.

And don't even try to spin it into some sort of "Bush is stifling protest" crapola. The military rule regarding any type of political activism has been in place since the early eighties when my navel career began.

Can't wait to see how Bush's Corporate News covers this protest- I will bet a dollar that the protest is given very short shrift.

They largely downplay and ignore, with a quick sound bite of the nuttiest fruitcakes they can find for the video.

probably as much airplay as all the other protests. You will see through out the forums on the net"shut up or stand up" and "what happen to the activism from the 60's and vietnam"
what most people dont realize, we have had several protests that broke the records of the protests against the vietnam war. Problem is, it just doesnt make the news.

And then the second problem is the so called freedom zones.. so that when the press actually shows up for something is cares about like pushing the admin agenda, the people protesting cant be seen.

People have been protesting since this war started.. heck do people remember the human shields prewar? Good luck getting the MSM to show up though...

and anything that actually appears on the news, you are right, are the nutties people in the bunch or a complete setup.

How do cops set up violence in protests? well besides sitting there in threating ways filming you while demanding you dont film them,(i have been threatened about my camera many times and once for just taking a picture of a cop taking a picture of me) they will have a planted officer, that trys to rally people up into violence. Or even more effective, they have two planted officers (and this has been seen and proven through some great investigative wwork on the web) One posing as innocent and peaceful protester, the other the rallyer from above. Cops suddenly and seemingly without reasons, roughly arrest peaceful undercover cop, this gets people very angry around him, seeing a seeming innocent person, attacked. Rally cop then has an easy time to rally people to rise up against the cops. Instant discredit to protest and instant new story. Sometimes they just film the rally cop getting arrested if they cant rally up the protesters. It really is effective and makes people not want to show up to these things.
SO dont always believe the nuts you see on tv.. I belive a majority are planted as groups want to be effective, no abhorred.

-The majority of American citizens do not support this war. This is a natural, normal response, "the right to assemble, peacefully" that we have in this country. This is a acceptable form of expression.

From the article...

He said the anti-war protesters, especially those who are veterans or who are on active duty, "need to remember the sacrifice we have made and what our fallen comrades would say if they are alive."

Personally, I believe I do appreciate their sacrifice. If I didn't, I wouldn't even care about how badly this war is going.

I see an entrepreneur here. Be careful though, you'll be labeled unpatriotic for helping people voice their beliefs. Freedom of opinion and speech is a danger under this administration.

White House spokesman Trey Bohn responded ..... He said Conyers' "assertion that the president fires generals with whom he disagrees is flat wrong."

And the White House continues lying. I suspect they justify this statement internally with thinking something like "The Secretary of Defense fires generals, not the President." And/or "He retired, was not fired."

    On a related note:
Retired General Anthony Zinni on speaking up about the war's problems:

"It is part of your duty. Look, there is one statement that bothers me more than anything else. And that's the idea that when the troops are in combat, everybody has to shut up. Imagine if we put troops in combat with a faulty rifle, and that rifle was malfunctioning, and troops were dying as a result," says Zinni.

"I can't think anyone would allow that to happen, that would not speak up. Well, what's the difference between a faulty plan and strategy that's getting just as many troops killed? It's leading down a path where we're not succeeding and accomplishing the missions we've set out to do."
