heroes!
Wow. This is huge. Obviously, some scientists are going to do this just for the money, most maybe, and I just hope it doesn't turn some scientists against each other.
And he looks happy givving the money.
This gentleman like James Bond knows the trick. It also advertises Virgin
He is a fascinating guy. Hopefully his philanthropy will note only lead to some breakthroughs but also motivate others to create similar challenges
It is one stone to take out two birds...great marketing tool for Virigin as pointed out by Firozali but obviously it is great (if a solution is found) for our future generations! Cheers and good luck.
But we must remember that this will only work if we all pull together unlike the Kyoto Treaty.
I have an idea...plant trees. Don't they use CO2?
Yes, but they don't use them in the quantities that are being released into the atmosphere.
They also tend to have a deleterious effect on industry and property values; in order to build an apartment complex, office building, or a McMansion, one must clear away the "vegetable vermin" first.
Actually, too many trees is bad because the methane they produce has 20X the warming effect of CO2. Obviously trees are wonderful in lots of other ways but if you're only thinking about global warming they aren't the answer. Branson has the best answer and he's putting up money to do it.
Up next, a $50 Million prize to the scientist who can definitively debunk all of this talk about global warming and greenhouse gases.
Sponsored by ExxonMobil, of course, and the cream of the jest is at the end of the year they can put it on the balance sheet as "research into climate change." Brilliant!
I just watched a Discovery channel special on the Big Freeze. It is just as predictable that temps can drop 10 to 20 degrees in one year. It is also possible that Global warming will allow the partial melting of fresh water ice which would flood the ocean and stop the warm water conveyor belt from the equator. It is also possible that an meteor will hit us and end the speculation. A large volcanic eruption would drop world wide temps causing crops to fail etc. All of these things are possible and even probable. What can we do about it? Not much really just keep throwing money into basic research and try not to be so dependent on the weather.
Branson is a brilliant PR guy. The $25 million is both a tax writeoff and he gets to keep the resulting technology. BP just put up $500 million for research and won't get anywhere near the press Branson will get.
Even better, he's not talking about cutting back or penalizing people or making any country suffer like the politico in the photo op, he's talking about fixing the problem scientificially, which is what scientists said all along.
It's win-win. Good job, Mr. Branson.
As far as I can see every little bit we do will help. Branson is very good for having his finger on the pulse of public zeitgeist. Generally where he leads others follow.
