Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

How many deaths of innocent people is John Edwards responsible for in comparison with Dick Cheney?

If you ask yourself this question (without being biased), you might realize why people dislike Dick Cheney so much. Now don't get me wrong, calling for his death in an open-forum is certainly questionable... but having intense distaste for him is easily justified.

Oh and don't use 9-11 as an argument to illustrate the point of your retort, because if it wasn't for foreign policy implemented over the past 40 years by people just like Cheney... that tragedy would never have happened.

Not very consistent, though.

While I too disagree with wishing death on anyone, even this vile bastard, it's not quite the same as what Coulter did. This is one guy; she leveled an ad hominem attack at a large group of people (not just Edwards). These comments are made in a thread on Newsvine; her comments were made in a public speech that she knew (or should have known) would be picked up by the national press.

It's just not the same thing.

You consistently seed distorted misleading trollish articles by Ann Colter.

You are consistenly patronizing in your responses to my comments.

You consistently insist that you dislike distortion and smears while seeding them.

Your are consistently critical of the tone of comments you disagree with it and oblivious of the smears and garbage of those you agree with.

Yes you should do the right "thing" stop promoting the smears and lies of polemecists like Ann Coulter.

There are a couple of reasons why lefties shouldn't want Dick Cheney to die.

First, a dead man is a completely posable action figure hero; he will be remembered for all of the great things he's done, and because it's just not cool to criticize a dead man, all the not-so-great things will be off limits in the public discourse for a while. Maybe until after the next election. And this would be bad no matter what your politcal bent, because right now we need open debate about what is right and what is wrong with the current powers the executive branch has.

Second, if Bush has to select a new vice president, the new guy (or girl) might have presidential ambitions, and I kind of like how wide open the race is right now. Again, we need to have a real come-to-Jesus about checks and balances.

Is this really how far the left/right thing has come? Where we begin to wish death on each other? I don't care if Ann Coulter or Sean Hannity say stupid things. I don't care if Micheal Moore or Keith Olberman are idiots. That doesn't mean the rest of us have to behave this way. Especially on Newsvine! Insenstive! I'm sorry, but the Bush admin has gone way beyond any sensitivities to them. When you see the Devil, do you want to sympathize with his position? Have they shown any sensitivity to anybody in the last 6+ despicable years of blight on this country? If they show some sensitivity, then maybe we might, too. I suppose you forgave Jeffrey Dahmer and thought it insensitive to make jokes about cannibals? Poor Hitler was just a misunderstood artist? When people have sunk this far into evil and despotism, I fail to sympathize at all.

Eh, MGD, the Hitler and Dahmer analogies are a bit over the edge. Godwin's Rule. Google it.

publius - Let's not be too aghast. The schadenfreude on this board, however coarse, is only an inch deep. No one's cheering over anyone's grave here. Cheney's not dead. In fact, he's not one single bit worse than he was yesterday. He has a clot in his leg, and he has the best possible medical care in the world, and if it's removable it will be removed.

I don't agree with those of us actually rooting for Cheney to die. But I don't think Cheney suddenly deserves more sympathy than he did yesterday either, and it's probably unreasonable to expect the same liberals tossing around Cheney-to-Goebbels comparisons yesterday to suddenly speak gently about him today. Remember: he's personally taken it upon himself to be the bane of liberalism. So from a liberal perspective this is bound to look karmic, and liberals will naturally wish to point it out.

So an old guy with a history of heart and circulation issues develops a blood clot in his leg, and it was discovered before it did any damage. I say: Feh. Good for him that they caught it, of course. But it's hardly a surprise - if you'd have asked me yesterday, "what's the odds Cheney's carrying a blood clot somewhere?" I'd have given you 50/50 odds, at least. He's old, after all, and he's already had heart surgery. And it doesn't change my take on the man - namely that his vice-presidency has damaged the Constitution and our once-peerless political leverage overseas. In the process he's hurt my son's future opportunities and added enormously to his future burdens, so I take it personally. I won't wish Dick Cheney dead but I don't care to extend my gentle feelings toward him one iota further than that.

    MGD,

I don't know where you stand on any issues, but I believe your attitude is what is wrong with public discourse today. I am not singling you out, but rather commenting on the level of discussion that exists today.

I point out that certain comments are insensitive, and you point out that the object of those comments are insensitive, implying its ok to behave in such a manner. The attitude is that if the "other side" are idiots, than it is perfectly ok for me to act like an idiot as well. This is problematic on both the left and right sides.

what do you have against tinyurl? i think it's nice that the author used tinyurl to make the link fit on the page a little better. really long link that go off the side of the page or go onto a 2nd line are more annoying...
