GAUNTLET THROWN: President Bush called for the top 15 greenhouse gas producing nations, including the U.S., to set a goal for reducing the pollution by the end of 2008.
HOT TOPIC: The announcement could deflect criticism during next week's summit of leading industrialized nations, where global warming is sure to be discussed.
CLEARING THE AIR: The countries would begin talks this fall, but each would be able to develop its own strategy.
...Making Progress:
It's too early to judge the success of this operation ... But even at this early hour there are some encouraging signs.
Realllly!! Would that be the 90 people killed and 150 wounded. Do those "encouraging signs" include the 9 dead American troops today??
I propose that our incompetent president at least read the frakkin news before he makes idiotic proclamations like this.
The man is either a pathological liar or insane or perhaps both if he believes that. Clearly he doesn't view the mounting body count and violence as problems. Bonesmen never do mind the sacrifice others make in pursuit of power.
Body count? Do you have any clue what you are talking about?
- In WWI over 9 Million soldiers died, not counting the millions of civilian deaths ()
- In WWII over 60 MILLION people died ()
- In the course of 3 days the Battle of Gettysburg claimed over 50,000 lives. ()
The truth is, the casualties in this war pale in comparison to previous conflicts that the United States has engaged in.
The drop in soldiers and civilian deaths over the last 2 weeks does show that the program is working. This has to do with U.S. political pressure on the Iraq government to remove their restrictions on the troops and because the new U.S. Commander in Iraq means business and is driven to get results where others have failed.
Sam Howat is right, the casualties in this war, even counting Iraqi civilians, are negligible in a historical sense. But that completely misses the point.
And the recent drop in attacks only means that terrorists in Baghdad are bailing for the countryside. Note today's monstrous attack in Hillah -- 93 dead at the latest count, is an example of their redeployment. So, perhaps they will prescribe a surge in Hillah, at which point the terrorists will zoon back to Baghdad.
What will it have bought us, all these deaths? Will the Iraqis have learned democracy? Will they have enjoyed the fruits of peace? Will the world be safer, for democracy or anything else?
Ah...it's the old "we haven't lost nearly as many as in a world war" argument to prove that this is a good thing in Iraq.
I have an idea for you: Why don't you poll the Moms, Dads, wives, husbands, children, brothers, sisters, etc., of all the US war dead in Iraq and lets see if they think we are making progress...if they believe the "program is working."
And actually...get your facts right! Today's US dead (9) is the highest total daily KIA in over a month. Oh, and btw, since I first posted above, the Iraqi dead have risen to 120 with 200 wounded.
Body count? Do you have any clue what you are talking about? - In WWI over 9 Million soldiers died, not counting the millions of civilian deaths
Yes, was your point that Bush is still short of getting the Gold Medal in the Killer Olympics?
@Pamela - Yes that is exactly what I'm saying, because that type of sarcastic sick comment is exactly how I carry on in discussions regarding real people's lives.
By posting those statistics I showing that in each historical conflict of the past there has been a much greater loss of life in order to establish freedom.
This does not mean that I am some war-crazed-conservative, or think that we should be over there sacrificing young men and women in combat for no reason. My point is that this is war, people DIE in order to achieve these goals. It is unrealistic to imagine that we will pull out of IRAQ without having these causalities. Yes, more troops will die but that is because we are actually pushing back at the insurgents. To base your assessment of the success of the new programs in IRAQ solely on the casualty reports does not seem logical to me when you consider the big picture.
If you were to read articles with a clear, open mind, you might commonality of opinion and create a greater discussions on these issues that matter, even with people you don't always agree with.
loss of life in order to establish freedom.
Unfortunately, this war is to establish oil rights and a base of control in the region, nothing to do with freedom!
If you were to read articles with a clear, open mind, you might commonality of opinion and create a greater discussions on these issues that matter, even with people you don't always agree with.
That's true of everything here and in life so I'm not sure if you're suggesting that I'm closed minded. On the other hand to continue to debate certain points as having two sides when clear and overwhelming evidence shows there is no debate is fruitless and delusional. Here we had a President who lied and fixed intelligence, went to great lengths to smear and silence critics so he could start a war and every report of progress is a lie or misread of actual conditions. To entertain a different view isn't open minded it is empty headed.
I would love to see some Iraq soldiers, veterans that is, That had the guts to be on one of these speeches that his man gives and simply, heroic and wonderfully...TURN THEIR BACKS ON HIM..Now wouldn't that be a sign of things to come? That dear friends, is what real heroism could once again look like. A dream maybe, but a damn good one for me at least.
whoops! Make that American soldiers who have fought or are fighting in Iraq. That would be it I guess.
Here they are, Support the Troops, Oppose the Policy, link to Iraq Veterans against the war VIAW.
This is as perverse as it gets. A lying, incompetent fool tries to appear resolute (while in fact in prolonging a disaster until he leaves office) as if he were other than clueless about how to handle the disaster he created . The resistance will go on regardless of what "the decider" belatedly does to save the situation. And continually referring to Al Qaeda, as if he really knew anything about the multifaceted, variously motivated resistance, is done to suck in a few of the gullible here and there and maintain a premise that the Iraq disaster is about anything other than Israel, oil and ego.javascript:void(postComment())
