I studied abroad in S. Korea in college, and to them, this is an extremely important topic. There is no question to them of whether or not it happened, because they can simply go to their grandmothers and ask them about it.
The Japanese are a people that take their national pride very seriously, so I can understand why they want to sweep this under the rug. But there is a much more sinister reason behind their denial. Japan has been slowly but surely rearming themselves of the past two decades, and has obvious designs on recapturing some of their lost power in the region. While this doesn't bother me, all nations have the right to form a military, its their military build up, in combination with denials of past war atrocities that disturb me. It would be like Germany beginning a military build up while at the same time issuing statements that the holocaust never happened. That would frighten the hell out of me too!
