this makes me very sad. halberstam was one of america's great nonfiction writers. in addition to his excellent baseball writing, he wrote a book called "the amateurs," which i've read several times, about olympic rowing. his work would suffice as the library for an entire era of american sports. he'll be missed tremendously.
I really enjoyed "The Breaks of the Game" a great deal, many years ago. He could really write. A shame. Rather unfortunately coincidental that he was killed by a Berkeley journalism student, perhaps even one who had just listened to him speak. Definitely will be missed.
I hope he wasn't, uhm, targeted for elimination. What had he been up to lately? Was he writing about this Iraqi war? Does anybody have a download of the Orville Schell interview?
Didn't a Tongan prince get kill't on the same stretch of road?
