What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I think you hit the nail on the head by saying "continue to download my messages as a backup only". There is a realization that that which is internet (aka email) belongs on the internet and not on my pc. My pc is a backup when I can't connect.

Exactly, as much as i'd like to use Mail.app or Thunderbird (a stand-alone email app MUST be better than a web app, RIGHT?!?!), I don't because Gmail is that much better.

Agreed, backup or offline access is the only reason I still use a desktop app, albeit, once a week or so. I just dumped Mail.app for Thunderbird since I can add Calendar support to it and sync it to my Google Calendar, for free, a poor (or is he smart?)-man's Outlook. I used the beta of Spanning Sync but don't need it enough to pay for it.

I also have a beta of MailPlane I've been using but its only useful when I don't want a browser running.

does gmail allow you to access a mail server outside of gmail yet?

One thing that gmail needs is to add in better filter technology. I find their lack of flexibility to be frustrating.
