— The Office, a remake of the hit British series, really took off on NBC, becoming one of its top shows. One of the major draws of the show during the first two seasons, besides the antics of Michael Scott & Dwight K. Schrute, was the Jim and Pam will-they-or-won't-they relationship.
After their long-awaited kiss and Pam's "I can't" in the second season finale, that all changed, as Pam broke it off with her fiancé and Jim started dating Karen, their new co-worker from the Stamford office. But will they really keep Jim and Pam apart for another season? There's clearly still something there.
Brian Baumgartner, who plays Kevin Malone, says that while he doesn't know what's going to happen with Jim and Pam, "there is some big stuff coming up for that in the finale. I can tell you that Kevin plays an important role in deciding Karen or Pam. And he takes that role very seriously."
Will they really keep Jim and Karen together? And if they break it off, will the writers keep Karen around at the Scranton branch of Dunder-Mifflin? That could get interesting.
Actually, whether Karen stays or goes depends on something else entirely: whether Rashida Jones' new pilot for Fox gets picked up. "The Rules for Starting Over," produced by the Farrelly brothers," is a dating sitcom, and also stars Craig Bierko, Johnny Sneed, and Shaun Majumder. If Fox decides to run it as a series, Jones won't be returning as Karen.
Rumor has it that The Office has shot two endings for next week's season finale: one with Karen leaving and one where she stays. Fox is expected to announce the fate of "The Rules for Starting Over" during their upfronts on May 17 – the same day as the Office finale.
The Office is one of only a handful of shows that have been officially renewed already by NBC.
