GAUNTLET THROWN: President Bush called for the top 15 greenhouse gas producing nations, including the U.S., to set a goal for reducing the pollution by the end of 2008.
HOT TOPIC: The announcement could deflect criticism during next week's summit of leading industrialized nations, where global warming is sure to be discussed.
CLEARING THE AIR: The countries would begin talks this fall, but each would be able to develop its own strategy.
It is a nescessary evil to keep the soldiers in Iraq. After getting intangled in their politics, we should at least help them build a stable government that can hold power after the US leaves. Bush got us into the mess, yes but now the US needs to finish the job it started for the good of the Iraqi people.
Bush Plans News Conference Thursday
Thu May 24, 2007 9:40 AM EDT
It's good to save what was here when you were since they change often enough.
daladheri, One of the problems is that the US can't build anything without getting local cooperation and support. That will mean accepting groups that the US may not agree with on anything but the desire to see war stop. Those are the breaks and it is all damage control now.
It also means that many of the worst groups who were trained and armed by Americans as part of a different agenda will need to be acknowledged in terms of the funding loops that swing right through the CIA and biggest banks.
The Administration can't swing between who cares about Osama to the scare of the week after this many years and not expect us to think they take every one of us for morons. Give up the ruses and find a way out.
Same picture and post time, but after the conference, or babble fest if you tuned in, the headline changed...
Bush Wants Tougher Sanctions on Iran
LOL but the iraqi people want us to leave
the iraqi gov want us to leave
you dont force help on people that would rather shoot us tthan have us help them
they dont like us
and want us to leave
so no we dont have to stay
and you dont rebuild a government with foriegners
the unemployement is over 60%.. yeah more than half the iraqis are gettting no paycheck and have no job.. imaging your self with none and no prospect of one.
now imagine you best friend gets accidently killed by us forces.. idles minds are teh devils workshop.
only thing being built that works in iraq is that damned embassy and no that doesnt piss the iraqis off.. what if china "saved" us from bush and then build an embassy the size of maryland.. do you think we would belive that china would ever keep it's hands off our gov again?
and why are these people out of work besides it is american compnaies that got the no bid cost plus contracts (blank tax pay checks with no oversight on how it is spent), well we encourage companies like kbr to high forienng nationals rather than iraqis out of liability.
Yeah we probably should help stabilise iraq, it would work better with a un force composed of arabs and percians.. instead of gi joe. get familuar and culturally simular people on the ground. and you higher iraqis and iraqi companis to do the rebuilding. There is no reason 100% of iraqis cant be highers, as that country needs a crap load of work done. Work someone hard and they dont want to shoot you in the evening, they just want to relax.
But if you think we are actually helping in iraq, may i remind you who our great decider is. Has he dont anything right?
No we are not helping in iraq, your theory would be great if we were but we arent.
Nothing really has been done in 5 years as far as rebuilding.
5 YEARS LATER they cant keep the elec on for more than 4 hrs a day
5 years later 60% unemployeement
5 years late an unfunctioning gov
you know being bogged down in aphghanistanb was one of the things that bankrupted the soviet union.
Seems like you guys are ready to see the world's biggest blood bath. The Sunnis and Shiites are going to fight each other after the US pulls out. The situation will get worse if the US pulls out. I am not saying the US is doing an excellent job down there but the US keeps the peace. None can ignore the divisions in Iraq.
JoulesBeef, what do think the unemployed people will do after the US leave? As you said idle hands are the devils workshop. These people are going to pick up arms and fight each other. What jobs will they recieve after the US pulls out? Do you really think the UN wants to go in?
Seems like you guys are ready to see the world's biggest blood bath. The Sunnis and Shiites are going to fight each other after the US pulls out.
What, exactly, do you think is happening now?
but the iraqi people want us to leave the iraqi gov want us to leave
I thought the sound bite from a few days ago was that the US would leave when the Iraqi gov't asked us to. Am I going crazy or did they really say that? (i'm sure if they did say it, they didn't mean it)
chindi: I admit there is fighting occuring but it is going to get worse if the US pulls out.
Leah:
None of us have control over when the US pulls out. Bush will do things his own way even if the Iraqi gov't doesnt like it. I think the US should stay for two more years to continue building up Iraqi infrastructure then get out.
chindi: I admit there is fighting occuring but it is going to get worse if the US pulls out.
Do you know this for a fact?
It is a fact that Bush has made a mess that just keeps getting worse.
Bush will do things his own way even if the Iraqi gov't doesnt like it.
Now that's an understatement!
The funny thing is most of the Democrats advocating for ditching and leaving the Iraqis, passed the bill to invade Iraq in the first place. It is not entirely Bush's fault. I am not defending Bush but I think people should realize that Congress passed the bill to get us into this mess.
The funny thing is most of the Democrats advocating for ditching and leaving the Iraqis, passed the bill to invade Iraq in the first place.
Do you have any solid numbers to back this claim?
How many were not in office at that time?(Remember Republicans were controlling everything then)
In any case, they were lied to like the rest of us about the supposed threat Iraq was.
I think that some forgot the difference between a simple majority and a mandate, the Democratic Party has only a simple majority in congress, without bipartisan support on issues, its deadlock.
Congress operates like a bunch of indulged frat boys and girls taking the time to agree on what makes their lives cushier and ignoring the plain truth of blood soaked region, with millions maimed, injured, homeless and dying. Needless deaths from these conditions for children under five in Afghanistan alone were reported by the UN as 1,000 per day, approaching one per minute.
Those are just avoidable deaths in the children in Afghanistan under the age of five. We are killing a generation and Congress debates. It nauseates me there is so little moral courage and the President pulls out the Darth Card, again.
Six years of failing to find someone makes their endless spending and warring sound successful and it's odd that the FBI's Osama Investigations have been closed for like years. It gets confusing closing 9/11 and keeping after Osama, lots of fuzzy lines there.
darn forgot the quote that seems to get to the root of the Osama news, rare outside the election cycles
It came a day after fresh doubts were raised in Congress about Gonzales and his firing of eight federal prosecutors. Monica Goodling, Gonzales' former White House liaison, said he had tried to review his version of the firings with her at a time when lawmakers were homing in on conflicting accounts. Gonzales has testified he hasn't spoken with witnesses.
That's not something for the public to worry about, watch the Osama, step right up, have a fear pill
An entire generation had already been wiped out in the Iran-Iraq war - the Iraqis have lost more than we can ever imagine - these are people, human beings. I wish the leadership in this country could just acknowledge this fact for once. All they see are $$$ and oil barrels.
The UN reports it at 1,000 per day? That would be 365,000 a year.
So, I looked over in the Wikipedia, and it lists a fairly broad list of numbers, the highes of which is 49,000 total. Then again, it also listed Afghani deaths for 2006 as follows: A study by the Joint Co-ordinating and Monitoring Board, made up of the Afghan government, its key foreign backers and the UN, suggests that more than 3,700 people have died in 2006. The majority of the dead appear to be insurgents, but it is estimated that 1,000 civilians have also been killed this year, along with members of the Afghan National Army, the NATO-led international security assistance force, and a separate US contingent of soldiers.
I agree that every life lost is a sad thing, but I'd really like to know that people aren't out there cheapening the losses by inflating the figures for shock value.
Does anyone else find his timing in releasing all the "declassified intel" at a US Coast Guard graduation right when the spending bill is up for debate, his popularity is at an all-time low, other republicans are turning their backs on him in congress, and the justice department is falling apart to be at least slightly suspicious? I mean, this admin. has a habit of coming out with a "declassified" threat everytime the going gets rough...
Don't pay attention to what's going on at home! Al Queida is still out there...I think his quote was something like "the whirlwinds are blowing in from every direction and could be here any second." (paraphrased)
It amazes me that this administration still tries to ignore all the domestic issues and the bloodbath we are embroiled in by pulling the fear card against us...If we'd try multi-lateral diplomacy instead of all the posturing, we might get a better response internationally, and if we would clean house and stand up for what's right at home, politicians might worry about their job performance again!
I don't think playing that card is going to help much this time.
I can never understand why he doesn't ever consider things at home. He must have missed that day in his national guard training.
On a less serious note - that AP pic makes him look so old!
Ya - the AP guy who is in charge of photo selection for the Bush Admin is RUTHLESS!!! Especially with Cheney.
Arlo...the AP guy who is in charge of photo selection for the Bush Admin is RUTHLESS!!! Especially with Cheney.
Maybe that's where the fair and balanced part comes, a picture is worth a thousand words and those count for those of us who can't find worthwhile ones in the story section.
That's our "free" press in action: intoxicated by its rights, oblivious to its duties.
Yep its just a funny thing I've noticed. I didn't mean for my observation to reflect my political views (which cause me to secretly enjoy these awful photos), or even move the conversation in that direction (we should be talking about Iran).
But I think that even a baby would be scared of some pictures that are put up, without knowing who it is a picture of.
Memorable Presidential Statements:
"I am not a crook."
"I did not have sex with that woman."
"I am not a mouthbreather."
I'd love to see the look on his face if other world leaders would ask for "Tougher Sanctions" on USA for invading Iraq based on false pretext :P
I can't believe he's still pretending it's anything more than a business plan to get a cut of all the valuable sales, right down to forcing gmo crops on the farmers of Iraq with CPA-81. The Green Zone may have trouble growing seeds of Democracy but seeds of revenue are growing quite nicely, all over Iraq and to the distress of farmers there and throughout the world.
I'd love to see the look on his face if other world leaders would ask for "Tougher Sanctions" on USA
I'd love to see the look on your face if those sanctions ended up affecting you.
... forcing gmo crops on the farmers of Iraq...
I'm curious, which is a worse evil, GM crops, or people starving to death?
matt, quit trying to trick me into calling you an idiot and break COH
i was born a refugee! you act as if i had never been persecuted in my life.
I'd love to see the look on your face if those sanctions ended up affecting you. -Matt Kennedy
my summer tuition at OSU? $3000
"sanctions" are already affected me and millions of fellow students in America. So much money wasted into this Iraq war when it could have been properly allocated and maybe college would cost me $300/quarter instead of 10 times more.
what did I talk about Matt eh?
I talked about turning the tables, about the issue of double standards. We want to penalize Iran for breaking international law, yet we wouldn't let the international community penalize America for breaking similar goddamn laws.
What do you talk about? You completely deviate from my point and say oh i'd love to see you live in deplorable conditions.
WTF does that have anything to do with it? Are you trying to justify America being VIP and never have to abide by international laws when we DEMAND every other nation to actually follow them?
I'm sorry Matt, you are not a child and therefore I will not talk to you like one. You are a grown adult like me, so I will hold you to a higher standard. If you can't comprehend Reason & Logic, there are groups on Newsvine that are willing to help you with this. (see Logic on the Vine)
ps. If anybody is wondering why i'm so BLEH lately, it's because the Dark Side of the Frenzy is upon us. Booyakasha.
"sanctions" are already affected me and millions of fellow students in America. So much money wasted into this Iraq war when it could have been properly allocated and maybe college would cost me $300/quarter instead of 10 times more.
Yeah, and every educated person in my family has been through that. Heck, we're actually natives to this country! If you want free tuition so bad, go to Germany. I'm sure while you're getting taxed out the ass, you'll at least be happy knowing you aren't paying tens of thousands for your own education. What do you want? A free ride? I didn't get a free ride, my dad didn't get a free ride, nor did his, nor did my mom's, or hell, any of my relatives. So tell me, why the hell should we all get a free ride in life? Because we deserve it? Because we can't afford it otherwise?
You know, I hate the rich man at the top, because he makes more in seconds than we will in our entire working lives. But you know what? I still have enough dignity not to whine about the cost of education, something that primarily benefits... me!
You completely deviate from my point and say "oh i'd love to see you live in deplorable conditions".
Uh, no I didn't. You simply seem to make a disconnect... that sanctions won't hurt us, that they'd only hurt our leaders. Ha! Like they hurt the Iranian leaders, or the North Korean leaders, or even the Iraqi leaders. Sanctions don't hurt them, they hurt people like us. What I was saying is that if such a thing did happen, it would backfire in your face. I said nothing of the hypocrisy going on in international law. In fact, I only said two sentences. Where did you get so much from so little? If you'd like my view of sanctions, I think George W. Bush should shut the hell up. Are you satisfied?
I'm sorry Matt, you are not a child and therefore I will not talk to you like one. You are a grown adult like me, so I will hold you to a higher standard. If you can't comprehend Reason & Logic, there are groups on Newsvine that are willing to help you with this.
Step back and take a chill pill. While you're at it, perhaps you should take a look at that group you suggested. All you did was explode, and really, was it worth it to make yourself look... well... juvenile?
And by the way, feel free to call me an idiot if you'd like. I have no problem with telling it like it is.
Heck, we're actually natives to this country!
You are Native American?
"It's better to fight them there than to fight them here."
Does he really think that if we pull out of this occupation that the terrorists and insurgents there will suddenly appear on our streets?
well it seems these terrorists are fast swimmers. Apparently they're going to swim the Atlantic Ocean...........NOT.
concidering we arent fighting terrorists but iraqis that dont want us in their country anymore,
then no
but i bet the entire country of iraq appears on our no fly list.
Yes the 'enemy' in theory is becoming more and more broad and vague. I wonder if Bush even knows the difference between the religious factions in Iraq, or who he is even supposed to be supporting.
Chris Matthews asked a question of someone a few weeks ago saying essentially "So our troops are over there, but who are our troops supposed to shoot?" It all is portrayed as a big violent haze, which Bush just says is "The Enemy."
I wonder if Bush even knows the difference between the religious factions in Iraq, or who he is even supposed to be supporting.
heh...I'd love to ask Bush: "so what is the difference between Sunnis and Shias?"
or even "Find Iraq on this map."
Bush is diverting attention away from his failure in Iraq and Afghanistan.
JUST FYI
first the IAEA is a branch of the UN that we mostly influence
(we have a ton of small nations that have to vote our way our lose our money)
The IAEA has accused this admin of manupulating is reports and harrassing them for differnt language.
kinda like the global warming reports.
IRan was following the NPT treaty to the letter
was even letting the IAEA set up UN remotely operated cameras at it's nuke facilities.
Iran was also on of our best allies at the beggining of the war, turning over more al qauda than any other nation. they wanted to normalise relations with us. But that wasnt going to happen without bush's conditions.
SO we rathched up the rhetoric while we HAD the better hand. we called iran part of the axis of evil. WE demanded they give up the inalienable right to enrichment. (inalienable means you cant ask them to give it up and that is the language we put in there) we reward pakistan with billions after they break the NPT and yeah cry satan and hitler at iran who hasnt.. but iran was still complying with the iaea (mostly, a few complaints mainly brought up by us) so we put sanctions on iran, they responded by kicking out half the iaea inspectors. We wiated until the elections of the security council when we were able to get some more us friendly nations on the security council and increased sanctions more.
According the reports the cia has a secret war going on in iran as we speak
and we sent a ton of military hardware into the smalles and busiest shipping lanes in the world.
Bush wants war and he wants it bad and he will have war before he leaves office.
WE are setting up the situation. it's like yelling racial things in a minority neighbourhood. You really cant say look they are violent, when someone throws a rock at you.. as U instigated it. sure it wasnt right to have a rock thrown at you, but you also shouldnt be surprised when it happens.
THIS IS ALL BS, by this president, iran could easily be an ally now, helping in iraq, rather than laughing at the sidelines as we screw up.
Man o man.. IF reagan were here today!!! he would put bishie over his knee.
