— Until a couple of weeks ago, it was generally assumed that UFC 72: Victory would air for free on SpikeTV, home of UFC's The Ultimate Fighter and Ultimate Fight Night. When this was "changed" a few weeks back to a pay-per-view event, fans have accused Spike of backing out of the agreement, and have also accused UFC and Dana White of taking advantage of the fans. However, if we are to believe SpikeTV, UFC 72 was never planned to be anything but a PPV event.
This may come as a shock to those who saw countless stories about how the event would be carried on basic cable. Apparently, the internet sites advertising UFC 72 as being on SpikeTV may have just been jumping the gun. Here's what a representative for SpikeTV had to say about the matter:
"We were never scheduled to air [UFC72]. I've heard the rumors (that Spike backed out of televising the show due to lack of a compelling fight lineup), but we never committed to airing UFC 72. It's not as if we turned our backs on the UFC. Three big fights in two
weeks would have been very tough."
That makes sense. Regardless, UFC 72, airing from Belfast, Northern Ireland, is sure to be an exciting night of fights. Here is the scheduled line-up:
Rich Franklin vs. Yushin Okami
Forrest Griffin vs. Hector Ramirez
Rory Singer vs. Jason McDonald
Clay Guida vs. Tyson Griffin
The Franklin/Okami bout is marquee fight of the night and should be a good one. Since the fight is in Belfast, and it will air live in the US on PPV, it will be on earlier than usual here in the States at 3PM ET/Noon PT.
Be sure not to miss UFC 72: Victory, live from Belfast, on June 16.
