— Tonight saw the last two quarterfinal match-ups on The Ultimate Fighter 5. With Joe Lauzon and Gray Maynard already in the semis, tonight saw two fights: Nate Diaz versus Corey Hill and Matt Wiman versus Manny Gamburyan. All four of these guys are good fighters and the night was an interesting one.
The first match was the Corey Hill Nate Diaz match-up. The two were both on Team Pulver, and they were pretty buddy-buddy. Jens was not originally very pleased with this fact, although given who was left in the quarterfinals, it was inevitable. Corey Hill was the most raw fighter on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, but his raw potential and fire within made him a scary opponent. The general consensus is that Corey, with proper training, will eventually be a force to be reckoned with.
The fight played out differently than I'm sure most people would have guessed. Corey came out and looked great, manhandling the favorite Diaz. His rawness is everpresent, but his raw ability shined through during the fight. Although Corey was winning the fight, he got caught and was submitted by the more polished Nate Diaz. Nate Diaz will be heading to the semifinals.
The Matt Wiman/Manny Gamburyan fight was viewed as much more of a grudge match. Manny was probably the favorite going in, given his pedigree and "pitbull" mentality. The first round was absolutely all Manny. He pretty much dominated Wiman. In the second, however, Wiman came out firing and performed much better than he did in the first. He eventually got pretty gassed, though, and round and the fight went to Manny.
The semifinals look like this: Manny Gamburyan, Gray Maynard, Joe Lauzon, and Nate Diaz. The next few weeks will be fun.
