— The official weigh-ins for UFC 72 took place yesterday in Belfast, Northern Ireland. UFC 72 is the first UFC event to be held in Northern Ireland, and it will take place later today, live on pay-per-view, at 3PM ET/12PM PT. The fight card is an interesting one and is sure to be an exciting night for any UFC and MMA fan. The weigh-ins didn't bring any surprising results, and everyone made weight. For those who are interested, here are the weigh in results:
Rich Franklin (185) vs Yushin Okami (185)
Forrest Griffin (204) vs Hector Ramirez (204)
Jason MacDonald (185) vs Rory Singer (186)
Tyson Griffin (155) vs Clay Guida (155)
Marcus Davis (169) vs Jason Tan (169)
Eddie Sanchez (234) vs Colin Robinson (238)
Ed Herman (186) vs Scott Smith (185)
Dustin Hazelett (169) vs Steve Lynch (170)
There's been some disappointed discussion within MMA circles about the lack of big names in UFC 72, but that was to be expected. It's an understandable notion by Dana White and UFC powers that be, to try and expand the UFC internationally. Of course the marquee names aren't going to jump at the chance to fly across the world and fight in the United Kingdom. They'd much rather do their thing in the United States, preferably in Las Vegas. But, the fights aren't bad and UFC will tune in in droves to watch the fights today. The Okami v. Franklin bout is sure to be an interesting one, especially.
The international expansion is a solid plan by the UFC brass. They surely want to make MMA and the UFC the one and only combat sport in the world worth watching. UFC is taking over boxing in the United States and now they want to do it abroad. Will it work? Never underestimate the UFC.
