— That was a pretty crazy night.
For fans of the UFC and MMA and The Ultimate Fighter, last night's The Ultimate Fighter 5 finale was all you could ever hope for. Some crazy fights, including the rare no contest, the vengeance of BJ Penn, and the bizarre victory for Nate Diaz in the finale bout: all of this adds up to an exciting and dynamic night of mixed martial arts.
Here's a look at all of the results, plus some commentary.
Leonard Garcia defeated Allen Berube via submission, Round 1
Matt Wiman defeated Brian Geraghty via TKO, Round 1
Gray Maynard vs. Rob Emerson ruled no-contest, Round 2
This was an insane fight. Well, the end of it, actually, is what made it so bizarre. Gray was controlling the fight, had Emerson on the ropes, and was administering the end blow by picking up Emerson and driving him violently to the ground. The problem, although Emerson immediately tapped out, was that Gray knocked himself out when he slammed Rob to the ground. The replays clearly showed Gray hitting his head hard on the mat, then losing consciousness. Thus, the fight was ruled a no-contest.
Cole Miller def. Andy Wang via TKO, Round 1
Cole Miller was impressive. With him being so young, his ceiling in the UFC is very high.
Joe Lauzon def. Brandon Melendez via submission, Round 2
I thought Lauzon was a lock for the finals, and his performance reiterated why. He had complete control against Melendez, who is a quality fighter in his own right.
Roger Huerta defeated Doug Evans via TKO, Round 2
Thales Leities defeated Floyd Sword via triangle choke, Round 1
Nate Diaz defeated Manny Gamburyan via submission, Round 2
Another fluke-y fight, in which Manny's shoulder popped out of place in the second round and he couldn't continue. He had been beating Nate up to that point. Frustrating may for that fight to end.
BJ Penn defeated Jens Pulver via rear naked choke, round 2
BJ was the man in this fight, and you could tell just how much he wanted it from the outset. Jens didn't have a chance.
