This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said. "It's unfortunate that congressional Democrats continue to choose the route of confrontation."

Indeed, it's unfortunate that the Bush Administration has flouted the law for this long.

What gives you the idea that the Dems want us to be attacked? That's a pretty evil thing to say about 50% of the country.

Also, you have no problem with Cheney bascially saying he is above the Constitution and is his own branch of the government? Rahm E. isn't defunding him, just giving Cheney what he gets for being in the legislative branch. If Cheney doesn't want to be in the executive branch, he has to take it all the way.

It's not about the reasoning behind it, it's the effect that saying something like that has. It keeps the focus on the evil Democrats and away from the good Christian Republicans.

Sorry giving up our way of life and traveling down the paths of evil(aka torture) isnt worth it and if you recall the the terrorists dotn hate us because we have more bases than there ar ecountries on the planet or push our adgenda down peoples throats, but they hate us for our freedoms, so we fight them by dumping those freedoms??? well to me that means osama won. and personally i didnt vote of osama.

Oh, please! Cheney was claiming he wasn't part of the executive branch. What do you want the Democrats to do, waste tax payer dollars by paying for an executive branch position that doesn't exist, according to the man occupying the office? Rep. Emanuel (D-IL) clearly stated his case that Cheney should only be funded through his legislative pay only and not in addition to his executive pay as well: "[Cheney] is acting like he's unaccountable to anybody…and he's taking an unbelievable step saying he's not a member of the executive branch, he's a member of the legislative branch, therefore he doesn't have to provide information. … So I said, If that's your logic, then we shouldn't be funding you through the executive branch. Either Wednesday or Thursday my amendment will be on the floor, because the funding for the executive branch is on the floor. And I'll strike the money for the Vice President's Office. He can live off the Senate presidency budget that funds him up here. And that's fine. But if he's going to be funded in the executive branch, he complies with the rules that apply to everybody. He is not above the rules of the executive branch." Republicans seem to suffer from an amnesia of convenience.

Is there any mechanism within our Constitution, Congressional rules or legal precedent to expedite these investigations? These six-week gaps in progress, are quite frustrating to the notion of ‘due process' and should be accelerated if at all possible.

How many weeks has it been since Harriet Miers and Sara Taylor were subpoenaed? Have they simply rejected the Congressional order? Or are they allowed some period of time to compose lawyer-speak non-answers to any question they might be asked.

While historically it is my understanding that the process of Congressional investigations and committee hearings has been productive, I struggle to believe that it is efficient to its purpose.

Due process is just that. Fairness and democracy take time. Nixon got a long and ultimately fair hearing on Watergate, and the fairness of the process was good for the country. By contrast, the Clinton impeachment hearings were a partisan kangaroo court. Better to let the process work. The consequences of not doing it right can last far longer than Bush and Cheney's regime.

I know! There seems like nothing conservative at all in the opinions of many 'conservatives'! All that has seemed to have happened is that more and more and more and more money has been spent (where does it come from) by the government, and it seems to have grown grown grown grown (when do we stop). Even so, this is another story and another argument that should be made on a different thread.

Republican supporters seem to have a habit of skipping parts they don't like:

In fact, the Judiciary Committee's three most senior Republicans — Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, former chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah and Chuck Grassley of Iowa — sided with Democrats on the 13-3 vote last week to give Leahy the power to issue the subpoenas.

So much for democrats choosing the rules, being confrontational and playing partisan politics. It's gratifying to see some prominent republicans are also interested in preserving our constitutional rights. Perhaps all is not lost.

Disowned is an interesting word, must be lonely having the solid proud core of your base just dropping away from you as you gamely spill the same old deflections that have held up so well for so long.

Would the act of disowning yourself be terminally painful I wonder?

Banish the thought. As long as there are people who can titter together about 'not showing sweat'

[interesting choice, not 'not sweating' but 'Never let 'em see ya sweat.' gosh that's almost an admission of sweat right there] then you will always have a sporting metaphor to base your political cheerleading on. If the present quality of political defense equaled cheerleaders legs you would have varicose veins and if breasts then double mastectomies, not pretty but then brittle insecurity never is, as I say,you have each other but it must be a little disconcerting pretending your unpopularity is a chosen asset, especially when your minority is dwindling such that you may eventually lack numbers even to hide behind.

I suppose the cruelest cut is to be pitied by those you despise. You have my sympathies.

Security has been what practically every fascist regime has used to bend the people they govern to their will. Saying you'd rather have security than the freedoms we're guaranteed in our Constitution saddens me and I'm sure disgusts anyone who has ever read the Constitution.

Also, it's in our National Security to actually stop formation of Islamic militants instead of creating new ones, like the war in Iraq has done. But hey...why use logic?

The majority of this country is more concerned about the attack on the constitution by Bush that any supposed gain on the war on terror by listening to millions of Americans calls and reading our mail. Funny about how the only people in this country entitled to privacy are in the Cheney administration.

Perhaps you are old enough to remember when the nation pulled together in wartime or maybe your parents or grandparents told you about it.

Back then the war (WWII) were justified, and not invented to help the oil companies like Iraq was.

I believe in those days, like these, the Bush clan was pushing the other way and profiting.

epiphany sorbet - I am sure you are not suggesting that we overlook high crimes and misdemeanors in the whitehouse as well as the subversion of the constitution in the mistaken belief that this is somehow pulling together in time of war are you? Tell me you see the difference between a political hatchet job and genuine impeachable offenses.

There were many times that Bush's party and supporters should have intervened and said "no, you're going too far. This is not in the best interests of our country or our Democracy". You did not. You are still in denial and are blaming the Democrats for your political problems when in reality it was your own party's willingness to rubber stamp and not exercise oversight. The chickens are coming home to roost.

During the various Clinton scandals, especially Whitewater, the Republicans often said something along the lines of, "If you have nothing to hide, just produce the documents."

To our executive branch, Cheney included, I say, "If you have nothing to hide, reveal everything."
