The only thing that congress will do about immigration is talk about it. There will be nothing for the president to ever sign or veto. It's a long time coming, but the fact is that there isn't a way to pass any major immigration law.
To get votes, it'll have to be watered down. If it's watered down, you lose votes. You throw in amendments to pick up new votes. The amendments end up losing other votes.
Voters won't like any major immigration law. If it's too weak, they think you suck. If it's too strong, you open yourself up to all kinds of problems when immigration isn't a hot button issue. If it never gets voted on, come campaign time you can pick and choose what your position was according to the audience you're speaking with.
This is nothing more than a sideshow. Mark my words.
My personal thanks to all of you, my fellow Americans, that took the time to stop this current amnesty sham. We ended the attempted corporate labor and illegal immigrant love fest. The citizens did it! I understand the Senate switchboard was overwhelmed and shut down this morning and many representatives "saw the light" as a result of your actions. Good work!
Now what? To start with, the government needs to enforce the existing laws and get much more efficient at handling what should be routine application processing (ex. visa and passports). Meanwhile, complete the fence, prosecute those that hire illegals, get busy with the LEGAL paperwork processing and deport illegals when they are found.
Accountability and enforcement of current laws would go a long way and not cost additional billions and all this time and effort (after all this money is already being spent by the Bush Administration, taxpayers just need to get more results for what we are paying for). Let's just keep calling it as we see it, progress is finally being made.
Amen to that. I note also that Hillary Clinton and Obama voted for cloture on the bill. That very may well come back to haunt them in the general election.
