Restaurants Test Table Card Readers

nul
In this still taken from video, Wayne Smith, a patron at Ray?s Killer Creek restaurant in Alpharetta, Ga., swipes his credit card through a device that allows customers to pay for their meal at the table, Wednesday, May 8, 2007 . Pay at the table systems are popular in Europe and other parts of the world, but they haven't yet caught on in the U.S., mostly because manufacturers have never been able to show restaurant owners how an investment in these systems can benefit them. Interesting. When I was traveling in Europe (France specifically) I was advised to NEVER let my card out of my site. at a restaurant I was always to ask that the reader be brought to the table or to go to the register myself. Most places did have a reader that would be brought out to the table as well.

I like the idea. A sit-down restaurant is one of the few places you go where you have to hand over your card and it's actually out of your sight for several minutes. You'd like to think you can trust the waitstaff, but you never know....

I like this, I'll have to ask about it from now on at restaurants hopefully plant the idea in the manager's head that there is customer support for it.

I usually walk up to the register when I toss my card out; I figure there won't be any shenigans if I'm standing over the person running the transaction. This habit came from being charged for a bunch of GAP clothes one night when I was out at dinner. Lo and behold, the purchases were made when I was having dinner in a restaurant across the street. I got my dough back and I've never returned to the eatery but I heard they fired a whole buncha folk there. I still don't trust them any further than I can throw them though.
