Can't say that I'm really surprised by this. This is true of all the major big-city dailies in the country even witha aggressive cost-cutting measures. Over the last two years the Post has instituted a series of reductions in force in the newsroom by buying out senior reporters and editors with generous severance packages. These cuts have included such stars as Tom Edsall and the tv critic Tom Shales. Shales still writes for the Post but he's not an employee. He's now a "per piece" freelancer.
