STEPPING DOWN: Alberto Gonzales announced his resignation Monday, driven from office after a standoff with congressional critics over his honesty and competence.
TIMELINE: President Bush accepted the resignation last Friday. Gonzales announced his resignation effective Sept. 17.
REPLACEMENT: Solicitor General Paul Clement will be acting attorney general until a replacement is found and confirmed by the Senate.
they're just dropping off like flies these final few months.
Good riddance. Hopefully, his replacement won't be as bad.
LOL! This is Bush we're talking about. He replaced John Ashcroft with this bozo. Who's up next, Michael Vick?
Ha! Him or, I dunno, Seth Tyrssen perhaps.
Chertoff.
Whether you think that's a good thing or not depends on how much you like the PATRIOT act, how much you liked the government's handling of Katrina, and whether or not you think the government is correct in issuing warrantless wiretaps on US citizens.
Yay!
So then most sane people won't like it.
Ahem...Any truth to the rumor that, when asked why he was resigning he responded that he could not recall ever resigning?
I wouldn't be surprised. Honestly, you would think that amnesia of that degree of seriousness would bar someone from the job
As the people shouted in Argentina (admittedly, the people there were in a much worse situation): "Que se vayan todos!"
Bring back Ashcroft.
Bush promised Reid he wouldn't make any of his charming "interim appointments" during the Congressional recess. Anyone wanna bet how seriously we should take that? Come on, why do you suppose AGAG resigned now, rather than a month ago or a month later? But Bush won't break his promise, exactly. He'll just appoint Paul Clement "acting" AG until a new AG is confirmed, so that even if Congress won't confirm his nominee for dogcatcher, he'll still have one of his boys in charge of "Justice" (read, RNC, justice branch). A little refresher on Paul Clement, courtesy of Tim Grieve at Salon:
http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/
When Clement appeared before the Supreme Court on behalf of Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld in the Jose Padilla case on April 28, 2004, skeptical justices asked him about the risk that a detainee like Padilla might be abused while in custody. Clement's response: "Where the government is on a war footing ... you have to trust the executive to make the kind of quintessential military judgments that are involved in things like that." When Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted that some governments engage in "mild torture" to obtain information from detainees, Clement shot back: "Well, our executive doesn't."
Eight hours later, CBS News aired the first photographs of U.S. soldiers abusing detainees at Abu Ghraib.
Yeah, if Harry Reid is foolish enough to believe Bush then...oh wait.
Who's left in Bush's cabinet? Is even Cheney around anymore :)
Who would want the job? I wouldn't want to go through conformation hearings these days. I think that's the biggest reason we don't get the best people in these positions.
Its a good way to slow investigations, having people quit.. now congress has to research and debate a lame duck AG replacement.
After fighting attorney gate successfully until it fell off the radar and out of mainstream public interest, why quit now? Why would a man who has been by bush's side since before bush ran for governor, drop out now? With only a bit over a year left to his carrier? Any new censure amendments or anything to explain why this and why now? The only thing this admin does without planning is wars.
This is what I call cut and run
Well, well, well....this guy has finally shot off both feet and will be hobbling over to the resignation line to collect his early pension. Stay tuned, there is allot more fallout and embarrassment to come, it won't be long before the whole house come tumbling down, remember, pride before the fall!
what took the guy so long? Doesn't matter though, as they'll find another Bush crony down in Texas to replace him.
